We’ve put together this extensive overview highlighting Panama City Beach’s best restaurants to help you decide where to eat. We’ve included the best breakfast restaurants, family-friendly restaurants, local favorites, lunch spots, best seafood, killer cajun places, and more.img 8370

Panama City Beach, Florida is a popular destination for many families and there are lots of excellent restaurants to dine at. The kids and I ate like little piggies while we were there for spring break! After eating as much food as possible, here are our favorites.

Here is an overview of what I thought of many Panama City Beach restaurants. I have only included what I think are the best restaurants in Panama City Beach.

Best Brunch in Panama City Beach

Fried Chicken Eggs Benedict at Another Broken Egg

Fried Chicken Eggs Benedict at Another Broken Egg

Another Broken Egg Cafe

This is my favorite restaurant in Panama City Beach and their brunch is unbelievable. All their food is fantastic from the southern cuisine like grits and fried chicken to traditional brunch like eggs benedict or french toast. Their brunch cocktails are amazing too. I highly recommend the Spiked Nutella Latte. If you like to college coffee mugs you should buy one of theirs to take home. I’ve had mine for years now! Located at 11535 Hutchison Blvd, Panama City, FL 32407.

Gypsea Crepes

If you are in the mood for a crepe definitely go to Gypsea Crepes. This is a fun little breakfast joint where they’ve got sweet and savory choices. They have a small menu, but it’s super tasty and it’s easy to have them customize your crepe with things like fresh strawberries, Nutella, peanut butter, and lots of other yummy things. Located at 7012 Thomas Dr, Panama City Beach, FL 32408.

The PancakeryThe Pancakery

Every kind of pancake you could image plus items like avocado toast, omelettes, breakfast burritos and much more. They are also open for lunch. Located at 13800 Panama City Beach Pkwy, Panama City Beach, FL 32413.

Best Milkshakes in Panama City Beach

img 8451Gulf Coast Burger Co.

If you are looking for fried pickles or fried tomatoes the ones here are excellent. The burgers are spendy but so delicious and you can customize them however you like. The best part of eating here is not the hamburgers it’s the milkshakes. They offer huge milkshakes for just $12. These freakshakes are way over the top. 10031 Hutchison Blvd, Panama City Beach, FL 32407.

img 8379The Yard Milkshake Bar

Technically, this is only a milkshake place, but their milkshakes are phenomenal. They top their milkshakes with stuff like slices of cheesecake. My kids told me these were the best shakes they’ve ever had and at this point, they are basically experts. 15801 L C Hilton Jr Dr, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Best Donuts in Panama City Beach

Thomas Donut

Eating Thomas Donuts in the 2019 Kia Sorento

Thomas Donut

For the best donuts in Panama City Beach, head to Thomas Donut. It’s a bit out of the way out on the west side of town, but it’s more than worth venturing over there. Not only are they delicious, but they are cheap too. Every day they offer a special donut of the day. In the photo above I am holding the “donut of the day” in the picture above, it is an apple caramel pie donut and it was the best donut I have ever had! If you are craving fresh donuts this is the place. Located at 19208 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL 32413.

5 Restaurants with the best views in Panama City Beach

img 8554Schooners

Schooners last local beach club has good food and an even better view. We like to hang out on the beach near here since it is a public beach, then when we get hungry we hit Schooners. It’s mainly fried food, but they do offer this jerk chicken plate for a healthier option. Beer lovers be sure to try the Grayton 30A Beach Blonde. They also have their own interesting twist on a Moscow Mule, sadly I cannot recall what they call it. It has vanilla vodka. 5121 Gulf Dr, Panama City, FL 32408.

Pelican’s Bar & Grill

img 8594

Pelican’s is a seasonal restaurant at Bluegreen’s Bayside Resort & Spa. It’s located out on their awesome dock. They offer a small menu, but the cocktails are fantastic and the food is good too. The sunset views are phenomenal. 4114 Jan Cooley Dr, Panama City, FL 32408.

Pompano Joe’s

Pompano Joe’s

Pompano Joe’s is one of the larger restaurants at Pier Park. Try to dine here during the daylight to enjoy gulf views. Located at Pier Park. 16202 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL 32413.

Pineapple Willeys

This place is extremely kid-friendly. Huge deck with tons of outdoor seating with a beautiful gulf view. Great food, fantastic prices. You can eat alligator tail here which is apparently on many people’s bucket lists. Located at 9875 South Thomas Drive, Panama City Beach, Florida 32408.

Margaritaville

Sometimes there can be a long wait to eat here. The food is great, but it is expensive. The kid meals were the most expensive I have seen at 7.95. Located at Pier Park.

Best Seafood in Panama City Beach

Oysters at the Grand Marlin

Oysters at the Grand Marlin

The Grand Marlin

I took my kids to The Grand Marlin for a fancier dinner while we were in Panama City Beach. I made all of them try the baked oysters, they are so good! The Grand Marlin also has beautiful views of the Grand Lagoon. Their martini selection is excellent. I recommend making a reservation, it was extremely busy the night we dined here. The Grand Marlin is located at 5323 N. Lagoon Dr., Panama City, Florida 32408.

Saltwater Grill

I’ve heard this place is amazing. I haven’t tried it myself but after the 10th person recommended it for having the best fish, I thought I better put it on this list! It’s located at 11040 Hutchison Boulevard, Panama City Beach, Florida 32407.

Mike’s Cafe and Oyster Bar

Mike’s Cafe has a lot going on. It’s a down-home diner and seafood restaurant wrapped into one great place to eat. Located at 17554 Front Beach Road, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

Best Sandwich Shops in Panama City Beach

Andy’s Flour Power Cafe and Bakery

We picked up sandwiches and salads to go from Andy’s Flour Power Cafe and Bakery and took them out to Shell Island for a beach picnic. The sandwiches were huge and the strawberry salad was absolutely wonderful. They are open for brunch and lunch. I almost put this cafe under breakfast because they’ve got the best breakfast sandwich in town! 2629 Thomas Dr, Panama City, FL 32408.

Liza’s

Liza's Sandwich Shop

Liza’s is a small sandwich shop. They make great hot and cold sandwiches. 7328 Thomas Drive, Suite L, Panama City Beach, FL 32408.

Weekend in Austin, Texas Itinerary https://www.mommytravels.net/weekend-in-austin-texas-itinerary/ https://www.mommytravels.net/weekend-in-austin-texas-itinerary/#respond Sun, 03 Dec 2023 12:10:20 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=44454 For years, I’ve been hearing how cool Austin, Texas is. Frequently mentioned on lists of the best cities to live in, the city is booming in popularity. When I finally had the chance to spend a weekend in Austin, I jumped on the opportunity.

My expectations were high, but Austin is one of those places that lived up to its hype. I had so much fun exploring the quirky neighborhoods, eating all the street food, finding secret bars, and cooling off in the natural swimming holes.

If you’re planning a weekend trip to Austin, I’ve got you covered. Here’s a jam-packed Austin 2-day itinerary to help you make the most of your time there.

Weekend in Austin Itinerary

Day 1 Weekend in Austin- Explore South Congress and See Live Music

After landing in Austin, you’ll likely be hungry, so head out to one of the food truck areas to grab a quick bite before exploring the city. It’s some of the tastiest and most affordable!

Some of the best food truck parks are Rainey Street Food Trucks, East Riverside Food Trucks, and The Picnic, which are close to Barton Springs. I had a Mexican-style “mighty cone’ which was just as tasty as the food in Puerto Vallarta.Mexican-style mighty cone

For your first afternoon in Austin, take some time to explore the South Congress, one of Austin’s most popular neighborhoods. It’s an excellent place for shopping, with cute vintage shops, costume stores, and local boutiques.

South Congress is also a great place to snap some Insta-worthy pictures of the murals along the street. It’s home to the famous ” I love you so much!” mural on the side of Jo’s Coffee (1300 S Congress Ave).

A short walk away is my favorite, the “Greetings From Austin” mural that looks like a postcard (1720 S 1st St.)

For dinner, check out one of the restaurants on South Congress. We stumbled upon Aba, which is a lovely Mediterranean restaurant. They have an awesome patio, and the artichoke hummus is super tasty!

Aba Mediterranean Austin Restaurant

Before heading out for the night, take advantage of your first sunset in Austin and head to one of these three spots to watch the sun go down.

  • Witness thousands of bats flying nightly on the Congress Avenue Bridge. It’s the largest urban colony in North America, so it’s quite a sight.
  • If bats aren’t your thing, there’s another bridge you can visit just for sunset – the 360 Bridge (you’ll need a car to get here). You can’t stop on the bridge as traffic flows through it, but you can park nearby and climb up a small ledge next to it for a view above.
  • Alternatively, hike to the top of Mount Bonnell. It’s just a small hill that takes about ten minutes to climb, with lovely city and lake views.

For your first night out in Austin, it’s time to see some music since that’s what the city is known for! There are always shows at the countless venues on 6th Street and Rainey Street, or you can check out what concerts are happening at the larger venues.

If you’re lucky enough to visit Austin in October, you can attend the famous Austin City Limits music festival.Rainey Street Historic District

The Rainey Street Historic District was my favorite spot to go out in Austin. All the bars there are historic bungalow homes; walking around is so charming.

Day 2 Austin Itinerary: Explore the Natural Side of Austin and Speakeasy Hunt

Cure your hangover from the night before with a greasy brunch! Austin has a great brunch culture, which is the perfect way to kick off the day. I loved the Driskell 1886 cafe – their egg benny is fantastic!Driskell 1886 cafe

For day two, it’s time to embrace Austin’s natural side. Start with a visit to Zilker Park, a vast recreational area with botanical gardens.

If the weather is warm, head to Barton Springs nearby. It’s a swimming hole filled with water from nearby natural springs. It’s cold but so refreshing in the summer heat.Barton Springs

Tons of people come here with paddleboards, dogs, and drinks, so it’s a great vibe. It was my favorite memory of Austin!

If that’s not your jam, there are other water activities. You can go boating at Lake Travis or paddleboarding on Ladybird Lake in the city! It’s super popular among locals on the weekend; you’ll see hundreds of kayaks and paddleboards.

In case of rain or if you want to learn about Austin’s history and culture, head to one of the museums like the Bullock Texas State History Museum or the Blanton Museum of Art.Texas State Capitol

You can also check out the Texas State Capitol, the tallest one in the United States! It’s impressive to see from the outside, but you can also visit the inside of the building until 8 pm on weekends.

For dinner that night, embrace Austin’s BBQ scene. Franklin BBQ is one of the most popular spots for a meat-heavy meal. Vegans can enjoy the BBQ, too! We went to the Beer Plant, where I had the most delicious “pulled pork” sandwich.Franklin BBQ

For your second night out, explore East downtown Austin. The vibe here is more grungey, but I loved it. Start at Central Machine Works, a microbrewery beer hall in a spacious converted machine works. It has a cool vibe and great pizza.Central Machine Works

After leaving East Downtown, go on a speakeasy hunt throughout the city. They aren’t the easiest to get into, but they are worth the effort. My two favorites were Red-headed Stepchild, fronted by the “floppy disk repair co” on 119 E 5th St. You’d never know it was a bar from the outside!Speakeasy in Austin

You’ll need a passcode to get in the door lock, which we eventually got after asking around at non-speakasy bars. Another great one is Here Nor There (612 Brazos St), which also requires a password. I can’t tell you what they are because they change frequently, plus what would be the fun in that?

Where to Stay in AustinThe Driskell Hotel

To complement your weekend in Austin, you’ll want to find somewhere to stay that’s as cool as the city, and there are plenty of options.

We stayed downtown at the heart of the city on 6th Street in an Airbnb across from the Driskell Hotel. This had its ups and downs. It was nice to walk out my door with unlimited restaurants, co-working spaces, and bars nearby.

But on the flip side, it meant I could hear a lot of noise from the apartment. So, if you’re looking for something quiet, I’d recommend somewhere else, or at least not directly on 6th Street.

Across the river, South Congress is a great area to stay. It’s quieter than downtown, but there’s still plenty to do. Another popular neighborhood to stay in is East Downtown. It’s a district that has experienced growth in recent years and has some very cool bars.

Luxury: The Driskell Hotel – Where luxury meets Texas charm! This famous 1886 hotel is located downtown on 6th, so it’s an excellent place to stay if you want to be in the heart of the action.

You’ll fall in love when you enter the grand columned lobby, featuring marble floors and stained-glass domes. It’s worth checking out even if you aren’t staying here!

Mid-range: South Congress Hotel – this gorgeous boutique hotel features three unique restaurants, a coffee and bake shop, a lobby bar, and two locally-owned shops. The rooftop pool surrounded by lush gardens is perfect for cooling off from the Texas heat!

As the name suggests, it’s conveniently located in the South Congress neighborhood, so more shops and restaurants are steps outside your door.

Budget: Firehouse HostelFirehouse may be the only hostel in the central downtown area, but it’s also a solid choice. It’s within walking distance of everything you need and is in a funky converted firehouse. The best part is the attached speakeasy you enter via a bookshelf. So cool!

Arriving and Getting Around AustinSouth Congress

If you’re flying into Austin, you’ll be glad to know that the airport is just a 15-minute drive from the city. An Uber is the quickest way to get from the airport into the city center.

Getting around Austin is relatively easy as the neighborhoods you’ll be spending time in are pretty close to each other. And within each one, you can walk to bars, restaurants, and shops.

The easiest way to get between places is Uber or a scooter, which you can rent from Uber or Lyft. I wasn’t sure about the scooters at first, but they are actually really fun and efficient for getting around the city.

That said, if you plan to do a lot of sightseeing, renting a car may be worth it as some attractions are spread out from each other. While having a car is convenient, it isn’t necessary for a short weekend in Austin.

I loved my weekend in Austin- it was so much fun. It’s well worth planning a trip there; the city lives up to its reputation. I hope this Austin itinerary could help you discover some of the best parts of the city.

8 Best Hotels in Miami for Families https://www.mommytravels.net/8-best-hotels-in-miami-for-families/ Sat, 25 Nov 2023 10:40:07 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=44212 Miami is known not only for its beautiful beach clubs, vibrant culture, and exciting nightlife for grown-ups but also for being an excellent destination for family vacations.

Although the city can easily be considered a destination best suited for adults, as it is a vibrant city with famous shopping and nightlife (clearly perfect for girls’ trips), beach bars, art, and culture, this is not entirely the case!

One of the first and very important things you need to decide to create the optimal family trip to Miami is finding the perfect accommodation that suits everyone.

Here is a selection of the best family hotels for a trip to Miami, including some that are particularly great for families with kids!

Family-friendly hotel requirementsMiami Beach activity area

For a family hotel stay with breakfast options in-house, pools, and typical hotel amenities, your best options are large family guest rooms with two double beds or one master bedroom with a queen or king-size bed and a sofa bed. Or one of the largest suites!

Another great option for wonderful family holidays is to book an apartment or a condo. This does not have to be VRBO (but it can be), as many of the traditional booking apps also offer homestays, which have a range of positive factors for families on vacation.

So, what do we need to consider when recommending holiday accommodation for families?

Important hotel and property amenities for families on holiday. Miami

According to traveler reviews, this is the list of features and amenities that families really love about their accommodation to have a perfect family holiday.

  • A full kitchen
  • Spacious living quarters
  • Outdoor space
  • Washer and dryer
  • Close to playground or waterpark
  • TV and Internet
  • Babysitting service
  • Walking distance to the beach and popular activities

So, when researching the best accommodation for a Miami family holiday, I have looked for hotels and properties that provide as many of these as possible.

Having a full kitchen and spacious property also allows for a peaceful and slow start to the day with breakfast at home instead of rushing out to find something to eat with hungry kids. And if you wonder about the washer and dryer, it is because kids get messy

So let us jump in; these top-rated hotels and accommodations are optimal options for families traveling to Miami!

Family Hotels in North Miami

1. JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa

JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & SpaMid-Range Option (link above not affiliate link)

#Rated 8.4/10. Families love it for the kid’s pool, water park, water slides, outdoor space, and babysitting.

Situated a bit north of Downtown Miami and the highest highrise area of Miami, you find this hotel gem in Golden Beach, which is probably the best hotel for families ever in Miami-Dade County.

Why?

The biggest and best argument is that they have an entire water park directly connected to the hotel!

Staying at the JW Marriott Turnberry in northern Miami is like staying in a theme park, but where there is also lots of fun for the adults and high-quality service and amenities.

Quality, standard, elegance, and service have not been disrupted by the fact that this hotel has childish fun in focus, at least in the daytime.

JW Marriot has an incredible water park with slides, large outdoor space, a kid’s pool (there are a total of 5 outdoor swimming pools), surfing and bodyboarding, bicycle rental, and a lazy river that is perfect for kids of any age! At the Marriot, you don’t need to go anywhere to have fun for the whole family together.

For the grown-ups, there is a full-service spa where you can completely unwind and regain your energy. Find your zen with yoga, pilates, or fitness classes. There is also a sauna, spa tub, steam room, 36 holes of golf, and a golf driving range (and lessons available).

At night, choose between a sizzling Bourbon Steakhouse dinner, chill poolside dining at Cascata, or two other in-house restaurants. The Biltmore Hotel in Clark GablesBiltmore Hotel in Clark Gables

Mid-range to luxury option

#Rated 8.5/10. Families love it for its vast outdoor space and pools, waterpark nearby,

The venerable Biltmore Hotel, situated in Clark Gables, is a living legend as far as hotels go and is in a league of its own in this overview of great family hotels in Miami.

The hotel lies like a castle a little bit south of Miami in an incredible green outdoor area and gardens, perfect for leisure and outdoor activities for the whole family. Although it is not exactly walking distance from the beach, a short drive from the city – and this hotel still has a lot to offer within the hotel property!

The Biltmore has one of the largest hotel pools in the whole of the US, where you can lounge around for hours, as well as tennis courts, a gym, and a wellness department.

Minutes away, you can leave all worries behind and spend a day at the 18-hole, 71-par championship golf course that was designed in 1925 by legendary golf course architect Donald Ross.

Biltmore Amenities:

  • Huge outdoor pool and general recreational area
  • Spectacular surroundings
  • Gym and fitness center
  • Spa and wellness center
  • Onsite tennis and cycling
  • Golf course nearby
  • The Venetian Pools Water Park is nearby
  • Wifi
  • Onsite organized activities like cooking classes

You can have a lot of family fun without stressing about leaving the hotel. With three onsite restaurants, bars, an offer of classic English afternoon tea, and excellent in-room dining, your palate will not be bored!

The rooms are elegant with super amenities; the decor is lush and very far from a modern Scandinavian style. The only downside is that the family rooms have two large double beds and not a lot of space outside of the bed area without a separate bedroom.

If you upgrade to a suite, you will have that little extra space with a sofa and TV zone with a lounge to relax between adventures. But maybe that does not even matter, as there is almost infinite space to roam around at the Biltmore anyway.

The Biltmore is very close to the Venetian pools, Riviera Country Club by the golf course, and about a 25-minute drive from Downtown Miami.

What Is A Good Family Holiday Stay in Miami?

When it comes to choosing the right hotel for your family, there are certain things that you should look for to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Here are some key factors that will make your family vacation perfect so you can focus on adventures and quality time and not on issues with the accommodation.

  • Spacious Accommodations: Families need more space than the average traveler, so it’s essential to choose a hotel that offers spacious rooms or suites or outdoor space to accommodate everyone comfortably.
  • Family-Friendly Amenities: A good family hotel or property should provide amenities that cater to the needs of both children and adults. This can include things like a pool, kids’ club, playground, on-site restaurants with child-friendly menus, as well as a spa, a gym, and lounges.
  • In-house washer and dryer and a kitchen on-site, making a family holiday with kids so much easier! Breakfast at home in peace and quiet before you start exploring the city
  • Convenient Location: Choosing a hotel in a central location (tailored to what you want to do in Miami) will make it easier for your family to explore the city’s top attractions without having to travel too far. Stay in a place where you have walking distance to at least a handful of activities without having to get the car out or get a taxi.
  • Safety and Security is top-notch: As a parent, the safety and security of your family is a top priority. Look for hotels that have measures in place to ensure the well-being of their guests, such as 24/7 security and CCTV cameras.
  • Affordable Prices: Family vacations can be expensive, so it’s essential to have reasonably priced options that won’t break the bank. In this article, I have featured both luxury options and budget property versions for a family holiday to cater to any need or preference.

10 Family-Friendly Spots To Kayak In Texas https://www.mommytravels.net/10-family-friendly-spots-to-kayak-in-texas/ Mon, 20 Nov 2023 20:01:03 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=44100 Want to get your kids out on the water? Kayaking is a great family-friendly activity that just about everyone of any age can enjoy.

Not only does kayaking help develop motor skills, balance, and upper body strength, but it’s also loads of fun and a great way to explore lakes and rivers.

As hot and dry as Texas can be, it’s also home to a surprising number of family-friendly kayaking spots that are often situated near campsites, picnic spots, and beautiful parks.

Here are ten of the best kid-friendly kayaking spots in the Lone Star State.

10 Best Places To Take Your Kids Kayaking In Texas

1. Inks Lake State Park

Close to Austin is a beautiful body of water called Inks Lake State Park. This tranquil, enormous lake has an abundance of different kayak routes, including one that leads to the Valley Spring Creek Waterhole—a great place to stop paddling for a while and enjoy a refreshing dip.

Inks Lake is known for its majestic sunrises, so if you can get the kids together early enough, a dawn family paddle can make for a core memory experience.

2. Ladybird LakeLadybird Lake

Turtles, ladybirds, and miles of smooth waters are what Ladybird Lake offers families from across the US. This gentle lake is widely known as one of the most metropolitan places to kayak in Texas due to its location, right in Austin.

Just be careful about spending time around this lake after dark, as it tends to be a popular destination for the occasional fruit bat—they won’t bother you, but some kids might find them unsettling.

3. Mustang Island State Park, Bay Side

With powdery soft sand, crystal-clear waters, and the occasional dolphin pod, Mustang Island State Park should be on every Texas kayaker’s bucket list. Separated into two sides (the Gulf side and the bay side), Mustang Island has plenty of space to roam the waters without bumping into another paddler for hours.

The only thing to bear in mind about Mustang Island is that the road leading up to it is quite rural, so you’d need access to a car that can handle a few bumps.

 4. Galveston Island State Park, Bay Side

Galveston has over 32 miles of beaches, and Island State Park in Bay Side is one of the most beloved and popular kayaking sites in the whole of Texas. Found on the Gulf of Mexico strip, this park is protected by a breakwater and is known for its shallow, swimming-friendly bay that attracts many families on the weekend.

Because of the breakwater, Galveston’s waters are extremely calm and gentle, making it the perfect place to teach young ones how to paddle for the first time.

You can paddle intuitively or follow the trail as laid out by the reserve. There is also a nearby campsite if your family likes the idea of a multi-day kayaking adventure.

5. Guadalupe River

Found in the center of Hill Country, this beautiful river is a family-friendly kayaking hotspot that is popular for swimmers, paddle boarders, picnic-ers, and kayakers alike. The crystalline waters are easy to see through and wonderfully cool to swim in, so make sure your kids bring their swimsuits.

There is also a fascinating variety of trees near the Guadalupe River, including pine, sycamore, cypress, and even pecan. Settle down under the greens after a tranquil journey across the river.

6. Possum Kingdom State ParkPossum Kingdom State Park (1)

With more than 300 miles of shoreline to explore, Possum Kingdom has some of the best kayaking in the US. Its open waters make it more appropriate for older kids (12 and up) or families who have a bit more experience with paddling away from the shore. Due to the scale of Possum Kingdom, there is also the occasional motorboat to look out for, so make sure to keep an eye out for any that might cross your path.

Before you set out, it’s a good idea to ensure your whole family knows the basic rules, and Kayak Guru has an excellent guide that can help with this. This will ensure that you all know what to do to stay safe when out on the water or when encountering boats or other obstacles.

7. Lake Bastrop

Lake Bastrop is a great place to go if you want to experience more than one outdoor activity. The 900-acre lake is surrounded by a beautiful pine forest, which is safe to hike in with kids who have little experience with that kind of terrain.

With calm, still waters that several fish call home, Lake Bastrop is an excellent place to start your family’s kayaking journey in Texas.

8. Colorado River

One of the longest rivers in America, the Colorado River is renowned for offering safe, entry-level kayaking conditions that the whole family can enjoy. A large, broad river mouth and long, winding path make this river easy to navigate and provide plenty of natural scenery to take in while you paddle onward with your kids. There are virtually no rapids or hazardous spots to avoid on the Colorado River, making it perfect for children of all ages.

 9. Lake WhitneyLake Whitney

In 1951, Lake Whitney was created as an overflow for the Brazos River. Over the years, it’s become one of the most family-friendly locations, not just for kayaking but for anyone who enjoys watersports and fishing.

One of the prettiest lakes in Texas, Lake Whitney has calm waters and plenty of coves, marinas, and beaches. If you have little ones who’ve never kayaked before, this is a great place to get them started, as the lake is huge, and you can choose a secluded spot with easy entry and exit to the water.

10. Lake O’ The Pines

Living up to its name, Lake O’ The Pines is a reservoir surrounded by towering pine trees. The shore is lovely and shady, and there are plenty of parks, campgrounds, restroom facilities, playgrounds, and picnic spots dotted around the lake.

There are several beaches that make launching lightweight kayaks even easier and are great for kids who want to stay close to the shore. The lake has a surface area of 18,680 acres, so you’ll never run out of places to explore, and there’s good fishing, too, if you and your kids want to try to reel in a catch from your kayaks. The water conditions are generally mild, except in poor weather when it’s best to stay off the lake.

Any one of these family-friendly kayaking spots is ideal for taking your kids on an unforgettable adventure. Perhaps it will be the first of many!

Best Things to Do in El Paso https://www.mommytravels.net/best-things-to-do-in-el-paso/ Sun, 19 Nov 2023 10:57:20 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=44074 While El Paso may not be one of the most visited big cities in Texas, it contains a surprising amount of diverse and unique things to do that you won’t find in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, or San Antonio!  For one, El Paso is steeped in southwest history, which is still alive and on display today.  Second, it is a culturally diverse city, with close ties to its southern neighbor, Mexico, as well as its Spanish and southwestern roots.  Thirdly, El Paso is surrounded by mountains.  In fact, some of the tallest mountains in the state are within a short drive from El Paso.  This makes El Paso one of the most rugged and under-rated outdoor recreational playgrounds in Texas, with an astounding amount of hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and camping opportunities.

Location of El Paso

El Paso is located in the far southwestern corner of Texas.  It resides on the border with Mexico to the south, and the Mexican city of Juarez.  Just to the north is the state of New Mexico.  El Paso International Airport is the closest airport.

Best Time to Visit El Paso

The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are the best times to visit and enjoy the best things to do in El Paso.  Both spring and fall see mild and moderate temperatures and weather patterns.  Summer can be unbearably hot, with temperatures averaging in the high 90’s degrees Fahrenheit, and even triple digits.  If you plan to take part in any outdoor activities in El Paso in the summer, it is advised to start early and finish early, and be prepared with plenty of water and sun protection.  Winters in El Paso are relatively mild compared to the rest of the country, but you may still encounter frigid temperatures, harsh winds, and the occasional freak ice storm.

The Best Things to Do in El Paso

You will find a welcoming mix of things to do in El Paso that are perfectly suited to various interests, abilities, and itineraries!

#1: Explore Downtown El PasoDowntown El Paso, Texas

Downtown El Paso contains numerous districts and plazas, each with its own characteristic personality.  There’s the Las Plazas Art District, a trendy downtown area for dining and shopping.  Then there’s Pioneer Plaza, with more historical touches like statues, fountains, and iconic buildings.  San Jacinto Plaza embraces the natural side of El Paso, with its sprawling urban park in the center of downtown.   The Union Plaza District is steeped in old west and railroad history, as it was originally built in 1905 as the home of the El Paso Union Depot.  Now it is a popular entertainment and nightlife area, as well as the home of the Anthony Street Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.

#2: Franklin Mountains State Park

Franklin Mountains State Park Camping

When it comes to outdoor recreation in El Paso, Franklin Mountains State Park is the top destination in the area. This is due to the rugged and exhilarating environment the Franklin Mountains have created!  Many of the best hikes in El Paso can be found within the borders of Franklin Mountains State Park.  These hikes range in difficulty level and distance anywhere from easy 1 mile nature walks, to full day strenuous hikes, like the 8 mile hike to the highest point in the Franklin Mountains range, North Franklin Peak at an elevation of 7,192 feet.  There’s also the one of a kind El Paso Tin Mines Trail, a hike to the only tin mines in the United States, now abandoned.  El Paso Tin Mines Trail

Another pastime of visitors is mountain biking, as there are over 100 miles of available multi-use trails to bike.  In addition to hiking and mountain biking, you can also camp in Franklin Mountains State Park. The campsites here take full advantage of the stark contrast between the towering mountains and the expansive desert floor, with spacious and secluded sites nestled in the bases of the Franklin Mountains.  At night, you can enjoy an unobstructed sky, with views overlooking the sparkling lights of El Paso and Mexico in the distance.  Franklin Mountains State Park Trails

#3: Hueco Tanks State Park

Hueco Tanks State Park is one of the most unique state parks in not just Texas, but the entire southwest United States.  It is most known for its exceptional rock climbing opportunities, for anyone from beginner to advanced climbers.  There are multiple routes and varying levels of challenge.

Besides rock climbing, there are several hiking trails to enjoy, as well as the namesake “hueco tanks” to observe.  These natural tanks are really rock basins hewn from the land by the elements, that used to serve as early water collection sources.

Visitors can also take a self guided or guided tour to see the ancient pictographs and rock art visible among the rock walls of Hueco Tanks State Park.

#4: El Paso Scenic Drive OverlookEl Paso Scenic Overlook

If you are after epic views without the hiking, the El Paso Scenic Drive Overlook is the perfect addition to your itinerary.  This scenic overlook spans all of El Paso and nearby Mexico, and it is an added bonus if you happen to catch a sunrise or sunset from this vantage point.  There are several other great perks to the El Paso Scenic Drive Overlook.  It is free, easily accessible, and can be enjoyed in a quick visit.  Note that there is limited parking at the overlook, and on weekends it does tend to be busier, and parking can fill up.  El Paso Scenic Overlook

#5: The El Paso Mission Trail

On the historic El Paso Mission Trail, you can witness two exceptionally preserved missions and one chapel, built in the 17th and 18th centuries.  The 9 mile long El Paso Mission Trail and its buildings are a visual representation of the relationship between the area’s Native Americans, Spanish colonists, and early missionaries.  The Ysleta Mission, the oldest mission in Texas, was built in 1682 and is still in use today.  It also remains an important religious site for the Tigua Indian Tribe.  The Socorro Mission was built in 1789, and is an outstanding example of early Spanish architectural influence. The third and final stop on the El Paso Mission Trail is the Presidio Chapel of San Elizario, which was originally a military fortress in the 1700’s.  There is a 4th mission on the El Paso Mission Trail, the Guadalupe Mission, but it is on the Mexico side in Juarez. You can visit it by crossing the international border.

#6: Visit El Paso’s MuseumsVisit El Paso’s Museums

El Paso has a wide variety of museums to enjoy, each focusing on a unique characteristic of El Paso’s background and roots:

  • The El Paso Museum of Art is a free collection containing thousands of artifacts spanning from the Byzantine era to modern times. It encompasses American, Mexican, and European art, melding together the various backgrounds that influenced the culture of El Paso.

  • The El Paso Museum of History reflects El Paso’s cultural and multinational history.

  • The El Paso Holocaust Museum features stories from local Holocaust survivors.  Among the dozen Holocaust Museums across the United States, the El Paso Holocaust Museum is the only bilingual one.

  • The El Paso Museum of Archeology highlights the tapestry of histories occurring in this region: the history of the El Paso area, the southwest United States, and neighboring Mexico.

  • The Fort Bliss and Old Ironsides Museum showcases the history of Fort Bliss and the role it played in El Paso’s military presence.  Fort Bliss played a role in various conflicts, including the Mexican Revolution and World War II.  “Old Ironsides” references America’s military tank division, of which the museum contains a large exhibit.

  • The Centennial Museum is the oldest museum in El Paso and part of the University of Texas at El Paso.  Here you can explore both local and international art, as well as the adjacent Chihuahuan Desert Gardens.  The Chihuahuan Desert, which encompasses El Paso as well as areas to the north and south, plays a vital role in the history of El Paso, and is evidenced in both the museum and the gardens.

#7: El Paso Zoo

The El Paso Zoo is a great destination for families, with its resident animals from around the world, plus children’s activities like a splash pad, carousel, playground, and train.

#8: Sample Authentic Tex-Mex CuisineKiki's in El Paso

Due to its close proximity to Mexico, and subsequent cultural and culinary influences, visitors to El Paso have the opportunity to sample some of the best Tex Mex cuisine in the southwest! Local favorites include enchiladas, tacos, chile con carne, street corn, and tostadas. My favorite restaurant in El Paso is Kiki’s. Go here and order the machaca.

#9: Visit White Sands National Park, New Mexico

While this National Park may be located in another state than El Paso, it is only a 1.5 hour drive north into New Mexico, easily within the reach of a day visit from El Paso. Much like the surroundings of El Paso, White Sands National Park has been shaped and molded by the elements of the Chihuahuan Desert. Unlike El Paso, the terrain and geology here take on a much different form than the mountainous region of El Paso. It is a vivid comparison and testament to the power of environmental elements.

White Sands National Park is most beloved for its sand sledding opportunities. Bring your own sled, or rent one from the Visitor Center, and then enjoy hours of endless sledding down the dunes. You can also hike the trails in White Sands National Park, including short nature trails, and longer backcountry trails through endless seas of sand.

13 Best Things to Do in Snowmass, Colorado https://www.mommytravels.net/best-things-to-do-in-snowmass-colorado/ Sat, 18 Nov 2023 11:58:18 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=44063 Located in the Rocky Mountains, Snowmass is one of Colorado’s best yet most underrated skiing and snowboarding destinations. The things to do in Snowmass extend beyond the slopes, though.

When you’re not hitting the slopes of the Aspen Snowmass ski resort, try out all the awesome eateries and hang out around the vibrant village. And, although it’s primarily a winter destination, there’s so much to do in Snowmass during the summer, too.

As peak season — winter — approaches, here are my picks for the best things to do in Snowmass, as well as, a few tips to guide you in planning your trip.

Getting to Snowmass Village & MapFlying into Aspen

The closest airport to Snowmass Village is Aspen Airport (ASE), just a 15-minute drive away. It’s also known as the Pitkin County Airport.

Check if your accommodation offers pickup service (the hotel I stayed at, The Viceroy, does). If not, you can catch a cab or one of the local, free RFTA buses that depart from the airport regularly.

Aspen Airport receives direct flights from eight cities: Denver, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Van Nuys. This is great for a county airport but, being a smaller airport, it’s very prone to closing due to inclement weather.

In fact, they shut down flights on our way out; I had to take an Uber (yes, super long ride!) to Denver to make it back to work on time. I was, however, still able to make my connecting flight since there are plenty of flights that go from Denver to Aspen.

If you’re worried about this, you could choose to instead drive or get a shuttle from Eagle County Airport (1.5 hours away) or Denver International Airport (3.5 to 4 hours away).

Snowmass Village’s two main areas are Snowmass Base Village and Snowmass Mall. You can get to and from each with the Sky Cab gondola. You can also get around the whole village with the free shuttle bus system.

To get from Snowmass to the other three mountains of Aspen Snowmass (Aspen, Highlands, and Buttermilk) there’s the free RFTA bus that departs from the mall many times per day.

Note that, even though all four mountains are covered on a single lift ticket, they’re not actually connected by lift, just by shuttle.

Beginner’s Magic Ski Class + Essential Skiing TipsView from Viceroy

If you’re a skiing novice or even a total beginner, the Beginner’s Magic lessons offered at Aspen Snowmass will have you feeling confident as you hit the slopes.

Aspen Snowmass offers Beginner’s Magic clinics this year on November 24, November 25, and December 11, 2023. Private lessons are a must if you’ve never been skiing before!

Aspen Snowmass also offers adaptive skiing opportunities for persons with physical and cognitive disabilities through Challenge Aspen. There is also an autism-specific initiative, Ascendigo, that provides skiing and snowboarding lessons for both kids and adults.

As mentioned, the Aspen Snowmass ski resort consists of four mountains: Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk. The one closest to Snowmass Village is, of course, Snowmass.

Snowmass’ skiing season this year starts on November 23, 2023 and ends on April 14, 2024. It varies slightly year by year, but typically starts in late November and ends in mid-April.

The slopes are categorized by difficulty level, which is signified by color. Green slopes are the easiest, blue slopes are intermediate, and black slopes are advanced.

Make sure to check the slopes and where they lead to very carefully. I had to learn this lesson the hard way: I got off at the wrong spot on the mountain and there was no lift to go back down. I had two options: attempt a blue slope beyond my level or walk down the side of the mountain.

On the bright side, there were places for me to stop and rest along the way, such as the Elk Camp restaurant.  Part of knowing the slopes is knowing where you take a pit stop.Snowmass Village - Elk Camp Gondola

Try Snow Tubing and Dog Sledding

Skiing and snowboarding aren’t the only ways to experience the slopes of Snowmass. Try something a bit different by going tubing and/or dog sledding!

You can try snow tubing on the Snowmass Tubing Hill near the top of the Elk Camp gondola. From there, you’ll find several lanes open for tubing for both kids and adults. On Ullr Nights — seasonal nighttime parties at Snowmass — you can tube at nighttime, too.

Krabloonik is Snowmass’ local dog sled tour operator. They offer 45 to 60-minute dog sled tours in the morning, afternoon, and at twilight. It’s no doubt an unforgettable experience but it’s very pricey; Krabloonik’s current rates are $600 for adults and $300 for kids.

Eat at Steakhouse No. 316 in Downtown AspenDowntown Aspen

Steakhouse No. 316 was my favorite restaurant for a great steak. There are so many prime cuts to choose from, as well as lamb and a variety of seafood. The wine list is extensive, too. Choose your favorite cut, but I recommend getting the jumbo crab cakes as an appetizer.

This boutique steakhouse is located in a renovated Victorian home and has a classy, nocturnal atmosphere that I love. If you visit in summer, definitely get a table on the patio to enjoy the mountain breeze.

Snowmass Village

Hang Out at The Collective

Located in Snowmass Base Village, The Collective is a community hub with activities, games, eateries, and shopping opportunities.

The highlight of The Collective is the ice rink that’s open daily. Aside from that, there’s something going on pretty much every day. There’s live music, stand-up comedy, bingo, and chess nights, plus even art shows and educational talks. There’s also a game lounge with pool, foosball, board games, and more.

Warm Up at The Stew Pot

I don’t know about you, but skiing makes me crave comfort food, and there’s no better place in town for that than The Stew Pot

This homey restaurant serves classic American stews, soups, and sandwiches. Have a big bowl of beef stew or a hot pastrami sandwich, then top it off with a slice of homemade apple pie. I won’t lie, it’s pretty pricey for what it offers, but it’s one of the best-known restaurants in town.

Learn a New Art or Craft at Anderson Ranch Art Center

Regular readers of the blog will know that I love art galleries and art centers — I look for them in every place I visit! Snowmass Village is home to the Anderson Ranch Arts Center

The Anderson Ranch Arts Center has an art gallery as well as an outdoor sculpture collection. In addition, the center offers tons of workshops throughout the year. You can learn painting, ceramics, photography, printmaking, woodworking, and more.

If you’re an artist yourself, Anderson Ranch Art Center has studio sessions and is even open to residencies during the winter and spring.

Where to Stay in Snowmass: The Viceroy Snowmass Hotel

I haven’t stayed at Viewline Resort Snowmass but my friends have (when it was known as The Westin, before being renovated and rebranded), and they generally recommend it.

Viewline is right in Snowmass Village and more convenient to the slopes than The Viceroy. However, the accommodations, while good, are not as spectacular. There’s a restaurant, a bar, and a spa.Snowmass Village - Viceroy Hotel

Things to Do in Snowmass in the Summer

You might be surprised that there are plenty of things to do in Snowmass in the summer, too. Some activities pause for a month or two during spring and fall, and the summer season typically runs from June to September.

Biking

Outside of skiing season, bike riding is king in Snowmass. Snowmass Bike Park is the hub for everything mountain biking. It is served by two lifts, Chairlift and Elk Camp Gondola, until dusk. There are bike rentals, as well as clinics and private lessons.

Outside of Snowmass Village, the whole Roaring Fork Valley around Snowmass and the surrounding communities is ripe with great biking opportunities. If you’re an expert biker, you might want to try the 80-mile Rio Grande Trail between Glenwood Springs and Aspen.

Hiking

Snowmass Mountain is great for hiking but Maroon Bells, south of Snowmass, often take the spotlight. These are twin mountains that reach elevations of 14,000 feet.

Maroon Bells are most spectacular in the heart of summer when the flowers that blanket the mountains bloom. There are a wide variety of trail difficulties represented on these mountains.

Snowmass Free Concert Series

One of the highlights of summer in Snowmass is the Summer Free Concert Series. The concerts are held every Thursday at 5:30 pm.

The location is Fanny Hill, an outdoor venue with amazing mountain vistas. It’s also right by Snowmass Mall, so make it a plan to chill at the mall for an afternoon then get some takeout from one of the restaurants and enjoy the show!

Rafting

Whitewater rafting is one of the most fun ways to enjoy the warm weather and stunning landscapes around Snowmass in the summer.

Roaring Fork River and Arkansas River are the two most popular choices for rafting, with your options ranging from a serene float to a journey on Class 4 rapids.

Fly fishing

If you’re a fly fishing enthusiast, you’ll be in good company in Snowmass during the summer. Brown, brook, and rainbow trout are abundant in the Roaring Fork River and Fryingpan River — both big fly fishing destinations.

Snowmass Balloon Festival

Though not exactly in the summer, the Snowmass Balloon Festival in September is one of the top non-winter events of the year.

For three mornings in late September, the sky comes alive with colorful hot air balloons. You can find a comfortable spot to watch the balloons or make them the backdrop to a whimsical bike ride or hike.

Final Thoughts

Though skiing is the highlight of any Snowmass trip, there are so many awesome things to do in Snowmass besides that, including in the summer months.

Still, my favorite activity was class time, learning to ski and snowboard. The instructors were very attentive, and any fear I had melted away.

Beyond the things to do, Snowmass is simply gorgeous; I’m a sucker for mountain views, and the ones at Snowmass were exquisite. My trip was also enhanced by having a fantastic hotel as my home base — The Viceroy.

11 Fun Things to do in Kapa’a, Kauai, Hawaii https://www.mommytravels.net/things-to-do-in-kapaa-kauai-hawaii/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 11:36:40 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=43994 If you’re in the midst of planning a trip to Kauai, Hawaii, you’re probably debating between staying on the Garden Island’s North or South Shores. Given the attitudes of most Kauai guidebooks, you’d think that the small island’s East Coast is just as inaccessible as the beautiful, rugged Na Pali Coast on Kauai’s west side.

But Kauai’s East Coast, particularly the Kapa’a area, is seriously underrated. There are so many must-do things in Kapa’a to add to your Kauai itinerary.

This area of Kauai offers lush jungle, towering palm trees, and some of the best restaurants on the island. Stop viewing Kapa’a as “that spot on Kauai with bad traffic” and get exploring!

A Quick Introduction to Kapa’a, Kauai Waipouli Beach sunrise Kauai East Coast - 1-1

Kapa’a sits in the middle of Kauai’s Royal Coconut Coast. It’s said that the area’s signature palm trees are courtesy of an unlucky investor planted thousands of coconut trees along the coast, hoping to strike it rich, but not factoring in the decades it would take for the trees to reach maturity.

Located just 6 miles north of Lihue Airport, Kapa’a makes a convenient base for a Kauai vacation. Nearly 30% of the island’s population lives in the small area north of the Wailua River and east of Makaleha mountain range. You’ll find a high concentration of towns in this small geographical area of lush valleys and plentiful fresh water including Wailua, Wailua Homesteads, Waipouli, and Kapa’a. For the purposes of this post, we’re exploring things to do in this entire area.

While all of Hawaii caters to tourists, Kapa’a feels very different from Kauai’s other more tourist-centric destinations like Poipu. In Kapa’a, tourists need to merge into everyday life with the locals. Many downtown Kapa’a stores are designed with residents, not visitors’ souvenir shopping, in mind. If you need a supermarket, pharmacy, or hardware store while you’re on Kauai, you’ve come to the right spot!

With so many people calling the Kapa’a area home, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the East Coast  is the epicenter of Kauai’s notoriously bad traffic. There’s stop and go traffic, especially in the southbound lane, almost all day long. You can avoid this (to a certain extent) by using the bypass road around Kapa’a. Just remember, there’s only one main road around the island and everyone’s trying to get somewhere. Practice patience and know you’ll get where you need to go in good time.

Why Visit Kapa’a, Kauai

In addition to those striking palm trees, the Kapa’a area offers vast sandy beaches, access to the thick Kauai jungle you known from Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park films, and numerous municipal paths and hikes, all with a dramatic mountain backdrop. You’ll also find the mouth of Wailua River here, which is one of the most sacred places in all of Hawaii.

A base in Kapa’a puts you in the perfect position to explore all corners of Kauai. You can be in Princeville on the North Shore in about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the furthest reaches of the island – Waimea Canyon State Park – is only an hour’s drive away. But with so many things to do right around Kapa’a, you might find you never need to venture beyond this lush area during your entire Kauai stay.

13 Best Things To Do in and around Kapa’a Kauai

Hike the Kuilau Ridge TrailMountain valley view from the Kuilau Ridge Trail - 1-1

This popular jungle hike is located about a 20-minute drive inland from Kapa’a. An easy wide trail takes you uphill through lush foliage on 3.5 mile round-trip out and back hike. You can make it into an 8-mile loop hike if you prefer, but the trail narrows considerably when you reach the small waterfall at the 1.7 mile mark. Just be sure to wear shoes you don’t mind getting covered in Kauai’s infamous red clay!

Visit Keahua ArboretumKeahua Arboretum outside Kapaa Hawaii - 1-1

After your time hiking the Kuilau Ridge Trail, the neighboring Keahua Arboretum is a great place for picnic among native Hawaiian plants and trees. A stream runs through the Arboretum and trails crisscross this rainforest oasis.

Kayak the Wailua River to Secret Falls

One activity you’ll see on almost every Kauai itinerary whether you’re staying in Kapa’a or elsewhere is to kayak up the Wailua River and hike to Secret Falls. At this point, this waterfall is anything but secret! To reach Secret Falls, you’ll kayak two miles up the river from its mouth, then hike approximately a mile to the waterfall. There are several kayak rental shops in Wailua and Kapa’a who will either drop off your kayaks at the river or help you strap it to the top of your car.

Smith Family Garden Luau

If you’re looking for a luau experience in the Kapa’a area, the Smith Family Garden Luau is considered one of the best luaus on Kauai. Located in a beautiful, lush garden park, the experience includes a feast loaded with traditional Hawaiian foods followed by a show. Just be sure to make reservations in advance for this popular luau if this is going to be an integral part of your Kauai visit.

Get hand pies at Passion Bakery Café

This small bakery located in Wailua is a great place to pick up a breakfast sandwich or plate lunch. If you’re looking for some baked goods to take on a hike, they are especially known for their hand pies. (Try the haupia!) On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, they make fresh malasada donuts.

Shop at the Coconut Marketplace /Thursday farmer’s marketKauai East Coast Coconut Coast near Kapaa - 1-1

This open-air market right off the Kuhio Highway in Wailua is a fun place to take care of all of your Hawaiian shopping needs. The market includes gift shops, restaurants, and the Island Country Market where you pick up souvenirs, groceries, alcohol, and other supplies.

On Tuesdays and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., there’s a farmer’s market in the parking lot where you can stock up on produce like tropical fruit, avocados, and coconuts. Be sure to check out their calendar of events as they often offer hula and lei making classes as well as free hula shows.

Get breakfast at Java Kai

Be prepared for a line at this popular breakfast joint in downtown Kapa’a. Known for their smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, and, of course, coffee, this is the spot to grab breakfast and that required coconut latte in Kapa’a. Inside the café can get pretty cramped, but they also provide ample outdoor seating where you can enjoy your meal.

Hike on the Ke Ala Hele Makalae path Ke Ala Hele Makalae path on Kauai's East Coast - 1-1

Whether you’re looking to bike, scooter, or walk, the Ke Ala Hele Makalae multi-use path is a gentle, wide beach path that’s a great way to get out and enjoy the Coconut Coast. The 8-mile path uses an old train grade and is divided into two sections. The first section runs from Lydgate Beach Park to Waipouli. The northern part starts in Waipouli Park and continues to Ahini Point.

A popular destination along the Ke Ala Hele Makalae Path is the old Pineapple Dump site. Here you’ll find a large concrete structure left behind from an old pineapple cannery. From Kealia Beach, it’s just over a mile walk to the old Pineapple Dump. There’s a nice Pacific Ocean lookout here, along with an informational plaque about the area’s agricultural history.

Hike Sleeping GiantSleeping Giant Hike in Kauai

The Sleeping Giant (or Nounou Mountain) watches over Kapa’a. (Or at least the giant would if he hadn’t fallen asleep on the job after eating too much at a feast, according to local legend.) You can hike up this mountain via a rewarding, but difficult 3.2 round-trip, out and back hike. Like all Kauai hiking trails, the trail can be quite muddy and slippery. At the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the island, including a view of Mount Waialeale which is said the be the wettest place on earth with more than 400 inches of annual rainfall!

Ho’opi’i Falls Kauai Ho’opi’i Falls

This out and back hike along Kapa’a Stream takes you past a series of waterfalls on a 2.2 mile out and back hike. You’ll recognize the second set of falls from Jurassic Park. If you want to, you can take a refreshing swim in the cool water at the base of the waterfalls. Since the trailhead is accessed in a residential neighborhood, local residents ask that hikers wait until at least 8 a.m. to start the hike, take care to park appropriately, and keep their voices down when accessing the trail.

Catch the sunrise over Waipouli beach and visit Kukui Heiau

As you might expect, Kapa’a’s location on the island’s east coast means it’s not a great spot for sunsets. However, what it lacks in sunsets, it makes up for in sunrises. A beautiful spot to watch the sun rise out of the Pacific Ocean is Waipouli Beach. While there, you can stroll along the Ke Ala Hele Makalae Path and visit Kukui Heiau, a small temple used by early Hawaiians that’s now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Since this is a sacred spot, keep your visit brief and respect all the instructions on posted signs.

Best Kapa’a Restaurants

Lava Lava Beach Club

Lava Lava Beach Club Restaurant Kapaa Kauai - 1-1While no restaurant can’t actually operate on a Kauai beach, you can get a sandy, beachy dining experience at Lava Lava Beach Club where the outdoor tables are set up on a sandy expanse with an ocean view. This fun, casual restaurant has a great selection of both Hawaiian American fare and is a great spot to enjoy a mai tai.

Hukilau Lanai

One of the best restaurants on Kauai is tucked in the Kauai Coast Resort. They’re especially known for their fresh fish specials. Be sure to make your reservations well in advance.

Sam’s Ocean View

This favorite Kapa’a restaurant lives up to its name with a fantastic, unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean. The menu features small plates and inspired entrées and cocktails. If you’re struggling with jetlag, they have a great happy hour if you need an early dinner.

Conclusion: What to do in Kapa’a, Kauai

Kapa’a and the East Coast makes a fantastic base for your Kauai adventures. Instead of blowing through this area on your way to the North Shore, take time to really explore Kapa’a. You’ll find ample amenities, excellent restaurants, and rewarding hikes. It’s a wonderful place to merge into Hawaiian culture and live your best island life.
