The Mist Trail Hike: One of Yosemite’s Popular Hikes https://www.mommytravels.net/vernal-falls-mist-trail-hike-yosemite/ Thu, 09 Nov 2023 17:32:00 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=43861 Yosemite National Park is one of the most beautiful national parks in California. It has breathtaking landscapes, picturesque waterfalls, ancient giant sequoia groves, and more. There is no dearth of treks and trails in Yosemite National Park, ranging from easy to tough. We spent 4 days at this national park with friends and family after spending time in San Francisco. Our top experiences at Yosemite National Park with kids included the popular Glacier hike, easy treks like the Sentinel Dome hike, viewing the Yosemite Falls, and more.

This post is about the hike to Vernal Falls at Yosemite. As opposed to the Sentinel Dome hike which we did with our entire group of 8 adults and 6 kids, I attempted ‘The Mist Trail hike’ with a friend. We had a short amount of time while the kids were enjoying rafting at the Yosemite Village with other adults.

The Mist Trail in brief

Distance and Elevation: 3 miles round trip to Vernal Falls with a 1000 ft elevation to the top of Vernal falls.

7-miles round trip to Nevada Falls with an elevation gain of 1900 ft to the top of Nevada falls.

The Valley views on this trail are stupendous!

Best time to visit: The best time to do the Mist Trail is between April to July. Being one of Yosemite’s signature hikes, this trail does get crowded. So if you are hiking this trail in peak months, that too on a weekend, it is best to head out early around 7 am to avoid crowds.

The crowds thin out considerably after the top of Vernal Falls, if you continue to Nevada Falls.

Difficulty: Moderate. There are parts when you climb the Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls to reach to the top, which are quite steep.

Vernal Falls hike is one of the most popular trails

The Mist Trail to view Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls is one of the most popular hikes in Yosemite and for good reason. Unlike Yosemite Falls which can be viewed from Yosemite Valley, Vernal Falls can be viewed only if you take the trail. The Mist Trail hike gives you a close and personal experience of Vernal and Nevada Falls.

My friend and I decided to walk to the trailhead from the Curry Village but you can easily take a shuttle to the trailhead. The approximate 1 km walk stretched our muscles well.

Vernal-Falls-Trail-ValleyI couldn’t get enough of the coniferous trees around me.

The Mist Trail is moderately challenging especially climbing the short stretches that take you to the top of the 2 falls. The good part is that unlike one wow scene on some of the other trails, the scenic views are scattered all along the Vernal Falls trail at Yosemite.

Vernal-Falls-Bridge-ViewYou can see the Vernal Falls at a distance from the footbridge.

From the trailhead, there is an ascending path that takes you to a bridge looking up at Vernal Falls in the distance. You could turn back from here if you are looking at a short and easy trek.

Mist Trail Hike: Climb to the top of Vernal Falls

But if you continue ahead, you will understand why the hike is named as the Mist Trail. You reach very close to Vernal Falls and the sheer magnitude of water falling down creates a cloud of mist that leaves all hikers drenched.

Vernal-FallsThe cool mist from Vernal Falls is so refreshing!

Vernal Falls is just 317 feet tall but quite powerful.

On the hot day that we hiked, the mist felt lovely on our faces and arms. You could turn back from here without much regret.

Vernal-Falls-Rickety-Steps-DownThis near-vertical climb up the rocky stairs takes you to the top of Vernal Falls.

But if you continue the rocky path and take the near vertical climb up, only a few do – you will reach the top of Vernal Falls and be rewarded with a fabulous view of the valley around. You could turn back from here and have seen enough to brag to friends and family.

Vernal-Falls-Top You can see the whole valley and the Merced River from the top.

Climb to Nevada Falls and resting spot in between

If you continue just a bit more, it is a nearly flat path, you will reach the lovely Emerald Pool. Don’t be fooled by the loveliness though. The currents are very strong, so no swimming or even wading in the water.

Emereld-PoolEmerald Pool is a good spot to relax.

Silver-ApronThe Silver Apron gets its name because of the shimmering sheet of water coursing over the granite.

At the top of the pool is water rushing over a smooth granite land, aptly named as the Silver Apron. Rest awhile and enjoy the beauty of this spot. The crowds here are less when compared to the beginning of the trek from the trailhead to Vernal Falls. You can turn back from here easily.

But if you continue ahead, you would reach the bridge that looks up at Nevada Falls. Alas, we ran out of time and had to turn back from the bridge!

Nevada-Falls-At-DistanceWe saw the Nevada Falls at a distance. We opted out of going closer to the top because of a paucity of time.

A 1.5-mile path will take you to the top of Nevada Falls where one can see stunning views of the valley and the back of Half Dome. If you go all the way to the top of Nevada Falls, you are rewarded with scenic views of the back of Half Dome and the Liberty Cap. We reached only the bridge looking at Nevada Falls.

Anaheim Travel Guide https://www.mommytravels.net/anaheim-travel-guide/ Fri, 15 Sep 2023 11:14:00 +0000 http://www.mommytravels.net/?p=11962 Great family fun awaits you in Anaheim, California! There is a lot more magic in Anaheim than just Disneyland and the Los Angeles Angels. Here is how to have a family fun vacation with all Anaheim and Orange County have to offer.

Where To Dine in Anaheim

In addition to Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, Anaheim is at the cutting culinary edge offering Instagam-worthy confections at the Anaheim Packing House.

Dining with the family on vacation can be a challenge trying to accommodate everyone’s preferences, wants and needs, however, consider managing it by allowing everyone to select a meal at a local restaurant. Trust me, this will actually be kind of fun and interesting.

Here are some popular restaurants to select from.

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company is a favorite. Located at Anaheim Garden Walk, 321 W Katella Avenue their hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 am until 10 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11 am until 11 pm. They have a nice kid’s menu.

Disneyland’s Blue Bayou

Disneyland’s Blue Bayou is an adult favorite. Step into New Orleans for a moment of Bayou energy and cuisine. The hours vary and after dinner, take in Nightlife In N’awlins. This has been a favorite experience since 1967.  They are located at 1313 Disneyland Drive, New Orleans Square inside of Disneyland. The menu will definitely have you feeling as though you are front row and center on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Nik MilesIn n Out Burger

In n Out Burger is a must when in California. Everyone loves In n Out Burger. They are famous for having the freshest fast food long before fresh food was popular. They do not use freezers, heat lamps, or microwaves. The regular menu is awesome and the secret menu is just as dynamic. The hours vary by location. Anaheim has about multiple locations.

Pokinometry

Pokinometry

Pokinometry is a fresh favorite.  This is for all the fish lovers who like it raw. The name Poke + Sushi is how they came up with Poki. Located at 184 S Harbor Boulevard their hours are Monday through Friday from 11:30 am until 9:00 pm and Saturday through Sunday from 11:30 am until 8:30 pm. Explore their menu to see what great creations you can imagine.

La Palma Chicken Pie Shop

La Palma Chicken Pie Shop is one of my favorite places to dine in Anaheim. The restaurant has been family-owned and operated since 1953 and specializes in delicious chicken pot pies. They also serve a variety of other comfort food dishes including macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, and green beans. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, making it the perfect spot for a casual meal with friends or family.

The Catch

The Catch is another great place to eat in Anaheim. This seafood restaurant offers an extensive menu featuring everything from fresh fish tacos to grilled steaks and lobster tails. The atmosphere is modern yet relaxed, making it a great spot for both date nights or family dinners.

Tortilla Jo’s

Tortilla Jo’s is a great Mexican restaurant located in Downtown Disney. The menu features all of your favorite Mexican dishes like fajitas, burritos, quesadillas, and enchiladas as well as specialty cocktails like margaritas and sangria. They also have live music on the weekends which makes for a fun evening out with friends or family.

Pizza Press

Pizza Press is an ideal spot for pizza lovers looking for something new and different in Anaheim. This build-your-own pizzeria allows you to customize your own pizza by choosing from a wide selection of toppings such as pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, olives, onions, peppers, and more! You can also choose from their signature pizzas if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the options!

Iron Age Japanese Steakhouse

Iron Age Japanese Steakhouse is the perfect place to go for those seeking an interactive dining experience in Anaheim! This teppanyaki restaurant serves up delicious Japanese cuisine prepared right at your table by skilled chefs who will entertain you with their culinary theatrics while you enjoy your meal!

Where To Stay in Anaheim

Where to stay can also enhance your vacation. You want to make sure you have a family-friendly option to relax and enjoy when you are not exploring the city.

VRBO is an excellent option if you prefer a home-like feel or consider the Homewood Suites by Hilton Anaheim Resort and Cortona Inn & Suites Anaheim Resort (both are Disneyland Good Neighbor Hotels).

What To Explore in Anaheim

Family fun vacations are made for living life and creating family fun memories to last a lifetime and generation after generation. With this in mind, here are some fun attractions to explore.

Angels Stadium

Angels Stadium has a very nice history as all major stadiums do. Originally known as Anaheim Stadium when they opened in 1966 the stadium underwent a $100 million dollar renovation which began in October 1996.  The end goal was to convert it back to a baseball-only stadium and make it state of the art. You must tour it to fully appreciate the history. Located at 2000 E Gene Autry Way. Angels stadium

Disneyland

Disneyland and California Adventure are loads of family fun as always. You get two parks in one at Disneyland. The one thing you are sure to appreciate when visiting a Disney park is the Disney Magic you experience while there.

Be sure to see the nighttime parade known as the Main Street Electrical Parade at Disneyland and the Guardian of the Galaxy – Mission Breakout at Disneyland California Adventure. Located at 1313 Disneyland Dr they are spread across 85 acres of fun.Cars Land at Disneyland

Downtown Disney

Downtown Disney is tons of fun as well. Take in a few hours of the day and experience Disney life without all the rides but as an adult with dining, shopping, and events.Downtown Disney

Honda Center

Honda Center is a major piece of fabric in the sports and entertainment world. This venue is known throughout the country for its state-of-the-art facility and history. Home to the Anaheim Ducks this venue does not miss a beat and hosts several dynamic events.

Whether you are looking for the perfect concert or the best of the best sporting events it will be found at the Honda Center 9 times out of 10. Located at 2695 E Katella Avenue.

Shop at the Anaheim GardenWalk

This outdoor shopping center is home to over 40 stores and restaurants, making it the perfect place to find souvenirs or grab a bite to eat. From local boutiques to popular brands like Sephora and Anthropologie, you’ll be sure to find something that catches your eye here!

Knott’s Berry FarmKnotts Soak City

Knott’s Berry Farm is another great amusement park located near Anaheim that offers tons of fun for all ages! From roller coasters like Xcelerator and Silver Bullet to family-friendly attractions like Camp Snoopy and GhostRider, there’s no shortage of thrills here! Next door is there water park, Knott’s Soak City

Relax at Yorba Regional Park

Those looking for more laid-back activities during their stay in Anaheim can head over to Yorba Regional Park where they can enjoy activities such as fishing or boating on one of its many lakes or simply take a leisurely stroll through its lush green spaces!

Catch a Show at The Grove Theatre

Located just steps away from Disneyland Park entrance gates stands The Grove Theatre which hosts everything from Broadway musicals to comedy shows throughout the year – perfect if you’re looking for an evening out while visiting Anaheim!

Learn About Local History at Muzeo Museum & Cultural Center

Those who want to learn more about local history while visiting Anaheim should make sure they check out Muzeo Museum & Cultural Center which houses exhibits focusing on Orange County’s rich cultural heritage including Native American artifacts as well as works by local artists!

Get Some Thrills at Adventure City Theme Park

Last but not least there’s Adventure City Theme Park which offers plenty of thrills for all ages – from kiddie rides such as Tilt-A-Whirl and Bumper Cars to larger attractions like Sky Tower Ferris Wheel it has something for everyone here making it perfect if you have young kids along with you during your visit!

These are the many things to explore in Anaheim. Exploring and falling in love with Anaheim will never be a challenge.

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! My second favorite site to find flights is Momondo, another great site for finding cheap flights.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO.

Rent Clothes

Rent clothes for your trip with Travel Style Expert for only $50 a month! The first 30 days are free!

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Get Your Guide and Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If I am going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Take a Lyft

More often than not Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Discover Cars.

13 Best Things to Do in Lake Tahoe https://www.mommytravels.net/things-to-do-in-lake-tahoe/ Thu, 07 Sep 2023 11:15:13 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=42738 Are you looking for the best things to do in Lake Tahoe for your upcoming trip?

The good news is that Lake Tahoe is jam-packed with everything you could need for a fun expedition to the beautiful shores of this stunning alpine lake.

Whether you are a serious outdoor enthusiast or just want to lounge out by one of Lake Tahoe’s best beaches, there is something for everyone in this mountain getaway.

Now, get ready to build up your excitement and enthusiasm, as you can select all the unique things to do in Lake Tahoe for a fun-filled trip.

Get ready, as the crystal clear blue waters of Lake Tahoe are calling, and it’s your turn to make your own adventure.

13 Best Things to Do in Lake Tahoe

Whether you visit during the snowy winter or the sun-drenched summers, you will surely find plenty of things to do in Lake Tahoe.

If you arrive during the snow season, you can hit the slopes at one of the area’s incredible ski resorts or simply cuddle up by the fire in a charming cabin in the woods.

The most popular time to visit is from June through September when this alpine lake offers up a nearly endless list of things to do in Lake Tahoe in summer.

From catching some rays on one of Lake Tahoe’s tree-lined beaches to summiting Mount Tallac, you will be in for a fantastic mountain getaway.

With so many places to visit in Lake Tahoe and fun adventures along its shores, deciding what to add to your vacation itinerary will be hard.

To help you decide, dig into this list below to see what inspires you when visiting Lake Tahoe.

Visit Emerald Bay State ParkEmerald Bay

Emerald Bay is one of the top things to do in South Lake Tahoe as it draws in countless visitors to see its stunning crystal clear water that fades from deep blue to turquoise by the shore.

This national natural landmark is also a historic site of Vikingsholm Castle and the Fannette Island Teahouse, which was built in 1929 for a wealthy philanthropist as a summer getaway.

When planning to visit Emerald Bay, make sure to bring a hiking shirt and some good trail shoes so you can hike along the shore to hunt for hidden coves.

This is also a popular spot for daytrippers who arrive by boat to cruise the glassy waters in the sheltered bay.

To visit Emerald Bay and take a Vikingsholm tour, you must prepare for a semi-strenuous hike down a 1.7-mile trail that descends 377 feet.

Don’t worry, the hike is more than worth the effort to picnic by the water at one of Lake Tahoe’s most pristine destinations.

D.L. Bliss State Park

Lake Tahoe can get busy during the summer, and the perfect escape is an adventure to D.L. Bliss State Park, which is a bit of a hidden gem.

While the tourist crowds flock to other popular destinations around the lake, this park remains relatively quiet.

Not only is this one of the most beautiful sections of Lake Tahoe, but the shoreline is full of hidden coves and small beaches with jewel-like turquoise and emerald water.

The best way to access the best parts of this state park is to hike along the Rubicon Trail, starting at Calawee Beach, before heading south along the ridgeline and through the forest.

Make sure to pack your camping gear and book a campsite early, as this is the best spot to camp by the lake with a chance to sleep amongst the pine trees.

Before leaving D.L. Bliss, stop by to see the famous balancing rock, which you will swear is grinning at you.

Go Skiinglake tahoe ski resort

Lake Tahoe may be a big summer draw for tourists, but the area is best known for its incredible selection of ski resorts.

The options range from luxury ski resorts with their own villages, restaurants, and shopping to small hills with only rope tow lifts.

Lake Tahoe is blessed with not only excellent snow conditions, with an average of over 400 inches of snow per year, but this area of the Sierra Nevada mountains also sees 300-plus days of sunny weather.

This makes for a perfect combination of light powder during stormy days and lots of sunny “bluebird days” for carving down the slopes.

If you are new to skiing or snowboarding or are thinking about giving it a try, Lake Tahoe has plenty of resorts that offer lots of beginner runs along with lessons to help you get out on the snow.

This is your chance to test out all the skiing presents you got for Christmas, including some new goggles that will help you see the gorgeous lake right from the slopes.ski Tahoe

Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park

This quaint state park on the west shore of Lake Tahoe is an ideal destination for a camping trip where you can get up close to nature.

There are two campgrounds to choose from, with Sugar Pine Campground having the best facilities and the General Creek Campground offering a more remote setting.

Ed Z’Berg State Park is also home to one of the best beaches in Lake Tahoe, which seldomly is packed like other popular options closer to South Lake Tahoe.

Sugar Pine Point Beach is also a great place to rent a stand-up paddleboard or a kayak from West Shore Sports for a good paddle along the gorgeous crystal-clear water.

Several easy but worthwhile hikes inside the park showcase the park’s natural beauty without taking up too much of your visit.

Before leaving the park for the day, sign up for one of the tours of the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, which was first built in 1903.

Go Kayaking or Paddle Boarding at Sand Harbor

Sand Harbor is known for its natural rock garden that sits below some of Lake Tahoe’s most pristine and crystal-clear water.

This unique beach area provides a perfect opportunity to see it up close from a kayak or paddleboard while gliding across the water.

During the Lake Tahoe summer, there are rental companies along the shore, so there’s no need to bring your own

Just ensure to arrive early, as rentals are first come, first serve, and the water gets rough from the boat wakes.

Sand Harbor is also a great destination to spend the day relaxing at the beach for a short swim in the chilly water or for a picnic with some incredible views.

Hit the Beach

Summer in Lake Tahoe is all about enjoying some time at the beach, with gorgeous weather and views that will drop your jaw right from the shoreline.

There are fantastic beach options on all the shores of Lake Tahoe, ranging from quiet hidden stretches that must be reached by boat on the west shore to the mega beaches with a party vibe in South Lake.

Some of the most popular options around Lake Tahoe include:

  • Pope Beach – South Lake Tahoe
  • Baldwin Beach – South Lake Tahoe
  • Kings Beach State Recreation Area – North Lake Tahoe
  • Tahoe Vista Recreation Area – North Lake Tahoe
  • Meeks Bay – West Lake Tahoe
  • Secret Harbor – East Lake Tahoe

Not only are these great places to get a tan, but plenty of beaches offer adult libations at waterfront bars specializing in tropical cocktails, like the Sunset Beach Bar at Zephyr Cove.

If you are lucky enough to book a room at one of Lake Tahoe’s waterfront hotels, you can enjoy access to their private beach areas, which are far less crowded than most public options.

Go for a HikeMaggies Peak

When the weather is good, and the trails are dry, there is no better thing to do in Lake Tahoe than to go for a hike.

The shores of this alpine lake and the surrounding passes have a massive collection of well-maintained trails that provide easy access to the best Lake Tahoe attractions.

You can hike up to the edge of Desolation Wilderness to relax by the shores of Eagle Lake, or you can test your strength by climbing up to Maggie’s Peak.

There are options for every ability level, including paved paths that weave through the forest and streams near the Taylor Creek visitors center with a stop at the Mount Tallac Historic Site.

For serious hikers, you can attempt to scale Freel Peak, which is the tallest in the Lake Tahoe area, or you can attempt to complete the entire 170-mile Tahoe Rim Trail for a multi-day expedition.

For day trippers, try out the Floating Island and Cathedral Lakes Trail or the Fallen Leaf Lake Trail for a shorter but equally fulfilling adventure.

Hiking is also at the top of the list of cheap things to do in Lake Tahoe, especially if you take public transportation to avoid parking fees at the trailhead.

Take a scenic drive around the lake

One of the best ways to see Lake Tahoe is to go for a drive along the shore of Lake Tahoe, with stops to see the sights along the way.

The drive around the lake will take 1 hour 48 min (71.6 miles) if you make no stops and there is zero traffic, but this can easily be turned into a half or full-day excursion.

You can stop at a few beaches, snap some photos at a scenic viewpoint, and even slip in a few short hikes along the way.

If you time your drive right, you can also stop for lunch on the deck of a waterfront restaurant or catch the sunset on the lake’s eastern shore.

Another great reason to drive around the lake is to have a good time, even if the weather makes a turn for the worst, as you can still enjoy the views from the shelter of your vehicle.

Go for a Bike Ride on the Tahoe East Shore Trail

The Tahoe East Shore Bike Trail is commonly referred to as the most scenic bike path in California.

It starts in the heart of Incline Village and heads south with a turnaround at Sand Harbor, where you can stop for lunch or go for a quick swim to cool down.

This protected route offers plenty of room for cyclists away from the road full of passing cars, and there are plenty of stops along the way to check out some viewpoints and hidden beaches.

The route is 6 miles roundtrip and will take around 45 minutes if you push the pace, but we recommend stopping and reading the informative placards along the way.

If you are not traveling with a bike, you can easily rent one at Vista Trail Bikes, which offers reasonable rates and even better service, and they are located near the start of the path in Incline Village.

Go on a Boat Cruise

You don’t have to rent or own an expensive boat to enjoy a trip out on the water in Lake Tahoe.

In fact, you can book tickets to board the M.S. Dixie II, which is a historic Paddle Ship that takes passengers across the lake with breathtaking views of the must sees in Lake Tahoe.

You can choose to go for a daytime cruise where you can relax on the top deck while taking in the sites, including a swing through Emerald Bay.

If you are wondering what to do in Lake Tahoe for a classy evening out, you can book the evening cruise to enjoy live music and cocktails while watching the sunset behind the mountain peaks.

This is a perfect way to celebrate a special occasion or to wind down an amazing trip to Lake Tahoe with a celebratory ride across the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe.

Ride the Heavenly Gondola

There is no better way to get a panoramic view of Lake Tahoe than to ride the Heavenly Gondola up the mountain.

This should be at the top of the list of best things to do at Lake Tahoe for those not interested in a tough hike up to the top of one of the surrounding peaks.

The 2.4-mile ride to the top offers scenic views along the way to the observation deck, which sits at 9123 feet and is 2898 feet above Lake Tahoe.

When you arrive at the top, make sure to grab a coffee or a hot beverage to keep you warm from Cafe Blue.

This is also one of the top things to do in Lake Tahoe in winter, as the Gondola is open to both skiers and non-skiers alike and provides a chance to see Tahoe blanketed in snow.

Check the weather before booking, and bundle up, as it can be much colder at these higher elevations.

Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

Whether you are a Thespian or a casual theater enthusiast, the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival will surely be your trip’s highlight.

Each summer, this fantastic venue on the shores of Lake Tahoe at Sand Harbor offers a chance to enjoy a live performance with your toes in the sand while enjoying a glass of wine.

The shows are also strategically timed to start early enough that you will get to enjoy the sunset during the performance for an extra dramatic effect.

While the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival runs throughout the summer, tickets sell out quickly for their shows, with weekend seats going the fastest.

Make sure to save some room to enjoy a delicious dinner and a show, as they feature a full menu of tasty treats from Shakepear’s Kitchen.

Donner Memorial State Park

Lake Tahoe has a sister lake that is just a short drive from Tahoe City, which offers a different mountain lake feel set just outside the town of Truckee.

This state park has two main beaches, including the Tahoe Donner Beach Club Marina and the West End Beach, which have all the amenities you will need for a day on the lake.

You will find everything from restaurants, beach bars, water sports rentals, and clean restrooms, so you won’t have to leave the fun-filled shores.

For a more peaceful time, you can head up Donner Creek and go for a leisurely float along the gentle current with a stop at the swimming hole before returning to Donner Lake.

This is also a popular destination for fishing for massive Mackinaw Trout, and multiple fishing charters are available to take you out for the day.

If you want to visit during the winter, Donner Memorial State Park is one of the area’s top destinations for cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing adventures along the lake’s trails.

Bottom Line

Now that you have had the time to peruse through this list of the best things to do in Lake Tahoe, all you have to do is pick out your perfect accommodation.

The last thing you will need to do is pack your bags and don’t forget to bring along this list of the best things to do in Lake Tahoe.

Bring your swimsuit and hiking shoes, and prepare to travel to this amazing mountain town with an impossibly blue lake.

5 Best California Vacation Beaches

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links, which means we may receive a commission if you click a link and purchase something that we have recommended but doesn’t cost you any extra. Please check out our disclosure policy for more details. Thank you for your support!

10 Fun Things to do in Carlsbad, California with Kids https://www.mommytravels.net/things-to-do-in-carlsbad-california-with-kids/ Thu, 23 Feb 2023 21:54:55 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=39186 If exploring some of the best beach towns in the USA is your goal, consider exploring Carlsbad, California.  There is so much to do and see in the area making it one of the best cities in California. The beaches in Carlsbad are some of the best in Southern California. It is a hidden gem that locals love and tourists are unaware of.

Let’s explore some of the best things to do in Carlsbad, California and why it is the perfect place to plan a beach vacation.

Where is Carlsbad, California?

San Diego to Carlsbad map Carlsbad is located about 35-60 minutes north of San Diego and about an hour and a half from Los Angeles. Traffic is crazy in California so you never know how long it will actually take to get from point A to point B.

Why is Carlsbad the Perfect Beach Town?

Carlsbad California Weather

There is plenty to do in Carlsbad but what makes it the perfect beach town in the USA is that it has perfect weather year-round.  The weather tends to be in the 60s and 70s all year long!  It is absolutely amazing.

The Pacific Ocean is typically cooler but in the Carlsbad area, it is slightly warmer because a power plant releases warm water right into the ocean.  Many people surf year-round.

10 Things to Do In CarlsbadLegoland Park entrance

One of the most well-known attractions in Carlsbad is Legoland.  Legoland is an amusement park, aquarium, and water park. Another exciting area is the Village of Carlsbad.  This area has many locally owned boutiques and restaurants to try.  There is some great outlet shopping in the area as well. But the beaches in Carlsbad are by far the best in Southern California.

Let’s explore some of the best things to do in Carlsbad.

Legoland

Everything is awesome at Legoland. Legoland is a dream destination for those under the age of 12. Legoland caters to a younger crowd.  Most of the rides within the amusement park are low intensity.  There are many play areas and shows. There is a multi-sensory theater that is “awesome” as well. Some of the most amazing Lego creations are displayed within the park.

There is an amazing Legoland Water Park and the Sea Life Aquarium. Both sections are add-ons to your Legoland admission ticket.  The water park is geared towards kids and has some amazing splash pads and family rides.  The Sea Life Aquarium shows off some of the local sea life creatures and even offers feeding times.

Legoland Hotels

Legoland hotel

One thing to mention is that there are two hotels located on the property.  The Legoland Hotel and the Legoland Castle Hotel.  In my opinion, these hotels are better than the amusement park! Each room is themed. At the Legoland Hotel there is a pirate, ninjago, friends, and kingdom-themed room.  At the Legoland Castle Hotel, there are knights and dragon, royal princess, and magic wizard-themed rooms.

Every night there is a dance party, royal entertainment from a king and queen, and a Lego building area in the lobby.  One of the best parts is when you check in you get to do a scavenger hunt around the hotel that ends in your room.  There is a secret treasure chest with Lego toys inside!

If you have kids, I highly recommend staying at the Legoland Hotel when visiting Carlsbad.

Beaches in Carlsbad

Carlsbad beaches

There are few beaches in Carlsbad. Each is unique and a perfect spot for your beach vacation.  You really can’t go wrong with the beaches in Carlsbad. Let’s explore the different options available.

Tamarack Beach State Beach

The most popular beach is Tammarack State Beach.  This beach is perfect for families and kids.  It offers swimming, kayaking, windsurfing, fishing, and surfing.  This area is great for beginner surfers.  Many people fish off of the Carlsbad jetties located nearby. There are a few picnic areas located near the beach as well.  The water is warmer in this area because a jet stream from the power plant releases warmer water in the area.

There is also a 4-mile walking path along the coast.  Throughout the day, you will see people walking, jogging, and cycling.  You can rent an electric bike and explore this path.  It is a really happening place.

If you are lucky, parking is available but it is hard to get.  This beach is a local favorite and unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of parking spots available. Facilities are available near the parking lot.

Terramar

Carlsbad beach

Terramar is a beautiful beach located near the Carlsbad Power Plant.  We went to the beach in December and my kids were swimming.  The water is warmer because the power plant releases warm water into the ocean.  This area is technically South Carlsbad Beach but what makes it different is that there are tall cliffs, making it where you actually have to walk down to get to the beach area.  This is also a great place to surf but you will need to bring your own board because there are no rental facilities nearby.  This beach does not have lifeguards on duty.

You can park along the street but it is first come first served.

North Carlsbad Beach

The North Carlsbad Beach extends from the border of Oceanside down to the Carlsbad Village.  It is a beautiful area commonly used by those who own property nearby. There are no lifeguards or public facilities.  This beach is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Southern California.

South State Beach

South State BeachSouth State Beach is another really popular beach in Carlsbad.  It is located along rugged cliffs which make it remote.  It is one of the best beaches in the county because all the area surrounding it is undeveloped.  This beach also includes Terramar.

Another section of South State Beach is called South Ponto. South Ponto has the best conditions for surfing.  If you are lucky, you might be able to see a surfing contest in this area.  They are held from time to time at South Ponto.

Campground

Because this area is undeveloped, there is a really nice campground.  The South State Beach Campground is extremely popular in the summer.  The campsite sits on the cliffs overlooking the beautiful ocean. There are stairs that go down to the beach from the campground.

There are two areas of South Beach one is very secluded near Terramar and the other is a wide open space near the campground.

South Ponto Beach

South Ponto Beach is technically part of South Beach but is a specific section worth highlighting. South Ponto offers swimming, surfing, sunbathing, and beach volleyball.  There are also lifeguards on duty.  This beach is a popular family destination because it offers a lot of facilities including restrooms and showers.

Parking: There is a free parking lot near South Ponto as well as a paid lot.  It cost $15.

Village of Carlsbad

The Village of Carlsbad has many historical sites, restaurants, and boutiques.  You can go on a historical walking and food tour in the area or just grab a bite to eat on your own.  Various events are held in the village. There is a weekly farmers market where you can buy fresh items.  There are also seasonal events such as: Art in the Village, Spring Shop Hop, Taste of Carlsbad, Halloween in the Village and many more fun events.

Carlsbad Premium Outlets

California has style. Most trendy and popular clothing styles start in California.  Shopping is a must, especially in Carlsbad. Carlsbad Premium Outlets have some great shops.  There are specific stores only found in California as well as designer and name-brand discounted stores. Outlet shopping is a great way to spend a day in Carlsbad.

It’s also perfectly safe to visit Los Angeles as a solo traveler, as long as you operate with the same level of caution you would in any big city.

Whether you’re taking in the sunset at Santa Monica Pier or going out for a solo dinner, Los Angeles is quite a comfortable place to explore on your own. So, no need to wait around for a travel buddy, just go.

2. Only Eat In-N-Out In'n'Out

This burger chain is popular for a reason, and by all means, give it a chance and experience it for yourself. But you’d be doing a disservice to yourself if you didn’t explore the broader food scene Los Angeles has to offer.

LA has lots of great food options to try. On my trip, I tried everything from Oaxacan food to Korean desserts. Consider adding Myung in Dumplings to your itinerary, a hole-in-the-wall spot popularized by legend Anthony Bourdain. And of course, if you happen across a food truck while you’re out and about jump on the opportunity to grab a bite.

3. Staying Land Locked Santa Monica

If you’re going to LA, beaches may already be on your mind. But as it’s such a big city you easily could have a completely landlocked experience without proactively planning in some beach time.

Santa Monica Pier has a nice beach and a charming feel to it. It’s a great place to wander over to during the day or even just for sunset. There are a variety of smaller beaches driving along the coast you could also explore if that’s how you’d like to spend a good majority of your time.

4. Thinking You Can Easily Get Across Town 2019 Silverado 4WD LTZ Crew

The best advice I received as I planned my own trip to Los Angeles, was to book my accommodations in the part of Los Angeles where I wanted to spend the most amount of time. Locals warned me repeatedly about the traffic and the bigness of the city.

I chose to stay in Santa Monica, as the area was also fairly walkable in and of itself. When planning excursions to other parts of LA, do so strategically. Consult a map and plan to see all attractions in similar areas around the same time rather than traveling back and forth from vastly different areas.

5. Missing Out on the Museums

LA is not all beaches, food, and palm trees (although we love all of those!). Los Angeles also has a solid museum scene. The Griffith Observatory is a must, as it also offers incredible views over the city and of the Hollywood sign. Plus, you might recognize it from the popular film, La La Land

If you can, plan your visit to overlap with sunset. The sunset views over the city from up here are beautiful.

A couple of other popular museums to check out are LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) and The Getty. You’ve likely seen the LACMA on Instagram, as the lamp posts outside of it are a popular photo shoot spot. Get your own iconic LA snapshot when you visit in front of this public art display titled ‘Urban Light.’

6. Expecting to Touch the Hollywood SignHollywood Sign

Some images you might have seen of the Hollywood sign could be misleading. You might be surprised to discover that you won’t be able (or allowed) to go all the way right up to the sign. It’s monitored around the clock by LA officials.

However, many of the hiking trails and walking tours will get you close enough for a worthwhile picture. I actually snapped my own photos from much further away, at the Griffith Observatory, and they’re still a great souvenir from my visit.

7. Not Packing a Sweater

Don’t make the mistake of expecting only hot weather during your trip to Los Angeles. While your days will likely feel balmy, evenings are consistently chilly so plan accordingly. Bring a lightweight cardigan, denim, or leather jacket, or a scarf that can also be worn as a wrap for easy layering.

8. Dressing Like a TouristLA

LA is pretty casual and you can get away with wearing pretty laid-back apparel. But there’s a line to avoid crossing if you don’t want to look like a tourist — your flip-flops are only for the beach and sneakers are for working out. Have some sandals or heels on hand, and stick to jeans and a tee shirt and you’ll be more likely to blend in a bit with the locals.

9. Visiting in Summer

While summertime is a perfectly fine time to visit most of California, this doesn’t apply as readily to Los Angeles. LA in the summer is extremely humid and muggy. For a more comfortable experience, avoid visiting in summer months (especially in July or August). Instead, visit in early fall or late spring for the best weather in LA.

10. Insisting on Witnessing a Celebrity Sighting

It’s true, LA is home to many of our beloved TV, movie, and music stars. But reconsider whether it’s really worth your time to try to see them out and about in LA. Of course, the tourism scene in LA caters to this desire by offering tours along routes of celebrity homes. But the reviews for tours like these aren’t the greatest.

While you can certainly research where celebrities tend to dine/hang out in LA and then show up there, do so more with the intent of enjoying yourself wherever you end up than focusing on securing a sighting. They’re also just people, after all…
