Actually, most meals in Portland are an experience. The people of Portland take lots of pride in their amazing food and the ingredients within their food. It’s a land of deliciousness, and breakfast in Portland is not to be missed out on. There are just so many breakfast places to choose from, each of them an individual delight.

Aside from the outright awesomeness of the food served up, there are a couple of other factors that add to the Portland breakfast experience. Not only do these restaurants take pride in their food, but they take pride in their appearance. Most of the breakfast places I’ve visited are cool and cute. Portland is absolutely stuffed with restaurants and shops decorated in a very rustic fashion.

Although eating breakfast in Portland is rather enjoyable, there’s also a bad side to this experience. You may or may not have heard jokes about Portlanders waiting ridiculous amounts of time, just to eat Sunday brunch. I’m here to tell you that this is absolutely true. Breakfast in Portland is incredibly popular due to how delicious it is. For that reason, the lines are always pretty long, especially at more well-known places. Even when the wait for Portland brunch is multiple hours, Portlanders stick it out for a tasty meal. If you’ve got nothing to do on the particular day of your brunch, then that’s fine. If you need to be somewhere after your Sunday brunch in Portland, then there’s a problem.

All of these things are key parts of the Portland breakfast experience that is often so good, but sometimes so very aggravating.

East Portland

Screen Door Beverage

Screen Door

If you’re a local to the area, it’s likely that you’ve been to Screen Door brunch, or you’ve walked past it. You’ve probably also seen the ridiculously long line that goes out the door, collects in a mass on the corner and goes on down the street. Although they are a full-time restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, their weekend brunch is very popular.

My mother took me on a little brunch date to the Screen Door a couple of years ago. Many people waiting in the cold outside were highly envious of our ability to waltz right in, due to our reservation. Of course, the line for the Screen Door isn’t too bad. It looks slightly worse than it actually is because the waiting area inside simply isn’t that big. Other than that, the staff does a good job of getting hungry people in and satisfied customers out.

The seating area inside was slightly cramped, but I couldn’t complain. How else were they supposed to fit in all those eager customers? Besides, it wasn’t that bad. The restaurant was decorated nice and smelled of delicious food. We picked up our menus, stirred by the amazing smells all around us. I indulged in the hot chocolate pictured above. It was the best hot chocolate I’ve consumed in my life, mainly because of the fantastic homemade whipped cream.

bananas foster french toast Screen Door

The Screen Door has a great number of delicious menu items, including biscuits and gravy, chicken and waffles, and a whole slew of other amazing foods. It was very hard for my mother and I to decide on what we wanted, and I eventually settled on the Cathead Biscuit Sandwich. They call it that because it’s made with a biscuit “the size of a cat’s head.” Sure enough, my meal arrived, and it was gigantic.

Brunch Aftermath…

The meal I had at brunch that day was the largest amount of food I have ever eaten. I just kept eating because it was so good. As it turns out, that much food is too much for a short, tween girl’s body to handle, and you can probably guess what happened next. Has anyone else eaten so much that they puked? It was absolutely worth it, and I still had some leftovers. To sum it up, I was very happy with my Sunday Portland brunch date.

Tusk

Tusk

Tusk

Tusk is a Middle Eastern food restaurant in East Portland that also serves brunch. My family hardly had to wait at all, and we were quickly seated at a table for four. Their brunch menu is slightly smaller than that of Screen Door, but it was tasty and unique.

We decided to order a couple of appetizers, including the hummus plate. Everybody ate quite a lot leading up to our actual brunch. There was plenty of time for me to admire the neat decorations of the restaurant, and peer around to see what other people had ordered. I had ordered yet another biscuit-based meal, the biscuits and gravy. My mother ordered a grain bowl, that she claims was delicious. I was satisfied yet again with brunch in Portland. The biscuits and gravy turned out to be a pretty good choice.

Fried Egg I’m in Love

Egg Sandwich at Fried Egg I'm in Love

Fried Egg I’m In Love has been enchanting the taste buds of Portland’s hungry and sleepy masses since 2012 with their delicious musically-inspired fried egg sandwiches. Picture this: eggs sourced from local farms, cooked to perfection over-medium, and adorned with the tantalizing Magic Egg Dust, their very own special spice blend. Everything started from the creative mind of chef and owner Jace Krause, who fused his passion for owning a business, love for breakfast food, cooking, and music to give birth to Fried Egg I’m In Love.

Now, let’s talk about their menu. Prepare to have your taste buds serenaded by ridiculously tasty classic and inventive breakfast sandwiches. From the legendary Yolko Ono to the rockin’ Egg Zeppelin, the fiery Sriracha Mix-A-Lot, and the rebellious Free-Range Against The Machine, each sandwich has a name as imaginative as its flavors. Hungry yet?

Hungry Portlanders can find Fried Egg I’m In Love in two locations. First, a vibrant yellow food cart awaits you in Downtown Portland’s bustling Pioneer Courthouse Square. And as of January 2019, they expanded to a brick-and-mortar 30-seat diner-style restaurant on SE Hawthorne Blvd and 35th. Brace yourself for a breakfast experience that will leave you longing for more.

Downtown Portland

Hunny Milk

The first time we ate brunch at Hunny Milk, it was merely a small pop up within another restaurant. It was close to Screen Door and Tusk. It hadn’t really been discovered yet, and there was practically nobody there. Each item on the menu sounded fantastic, and we quickly found out that they were, indeed, fantastic. Each tray held a beautiful, delicious food that each of us would happily eat time and time again.

Now, Hunny Milk has been recognized by citizens as a wonderful place to eat brunch in Portland. There is now an actual Hunny Milk restaurant, as well as the pop up. We decided to eat at their new restaurant near Downtown Portland this time.

The Good and the Bad

The new Hunny Milk has a nice and comfortable waiting area. It is quite large, with multiple squishy couches, bean bag chairs, books, magazines, and board games. All of this seemed great, until an hour and a half passed by. Remembering that the staff had told us the wait would only be forty-five minutes, my mother asked how much longer the wait would be. This time, the employee said that it should be another thirty minutes. At this point, my family felt as if we couldn’t give up on brunch because we had already waited so long.

Brunch at Hunny Milk

Finally, we got a table. Two and a half hours had passed since we arrived. We ordered quickly; biscuits with chorizo gravy for everyone, a couple of funnel cakes, a waffle, and a crepe. Excited for our food, we sat in our booth and waited some more. A whole hour passed before we were finally greeted with the satisfactory smells of biscuits, gravy, and funnel cake.

The food looked great, smelled great, and tasted even better. This did not make us any less bothered by the absolutely insane total wait time of three and half hours. It did fill our empty stomachs that hadn’t been tended to all day. After that painful wait, I got to eat the best biscuits and gravy I’ve ever had, plus a fantastic gourmet funnel cake. I still can’t decide if it was worth it, but I do know that Hunny Milk needs to optimize their staff and dining space.

Brunch Aftermath…

In the end, our food from Hunny Milk was some of the best I’ve ever consumed. Yes, the wait time crushed our Sunday brunch excitement quite a bit, but we stayed strong and had patience. I think it’s safe to say we’ve become true Portlanders at this point. Perhaps brunch in Portland isn’t to die for, or to wait several hours for, but that’s just how things worked out.

North Portland

Gravy Brunch

Gravy

Gravy is another great place to eat brunch in Portland. I’ve eaten there twice, both times due to hospital visits. The first time, I was getting a cast for my hand. We ended up at the hospital a while later for my brother. Although both brunch dates were a result of slightly bad occurrences, they were highly enjoyable.

Because the hospital we ended up at was in Portland, my mother and I decided to get brunch after the appointment. We hadn’t really tried a lot of the brunch in this particular area, so we walked down the street and gave Gravy a try. Gravy is a cute brunch place with some interesting artwork and rustic decor. By interesting, I mean weird paintings of caricatures and other such art.

Mom ordered an appetizer of oatmeal, as well as an order of the chili verde. I was less adventurous with my taste in food at that time, and went with a stack of pancakes. Although rather boring in comparison to the great number of other wonderful foods, the pancakes were actually quite good, possibly some of the best I’ve ever eaten. Mom enjoyed her chili verde, and I even stole a few bites because it looked so good.

Broder NordBroder Söder

You can experience a delightful Scandinavian breakfast and lunch at this trendy spot. Indulge in traditional Nordic staples and savor aquavit in a stylish ambiance. What sets this place apart is its availability of breakfast seven days a week, perfect for adding a touch of magic to your mornings. Start your culinary journey with a shared plate of aebleskiver, delectable Danish pancakes accompanied by zesty lemon curd and tangy lingonberry jam (pictured above). For something savory, we recommend the Swedish baked eggs and smoked trout hash. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to their North location; Broder has additional spots in Southeast and Southwest Portland, ensuring you won’t miss out on this incredible experience. (There’s even one in Hood River.)

Breakfast in Portland…

After all of these spectacular brunch experiences, I have no doubt in my mind that Portland brunch is worth the try. The food is delightful every time. Yes, wait times can be a pain, but if you book a reservation or arrive early enough, they aren’t so bad. If not, stick it out like a true Portlander. Pricing for most of these places is logical, considering the high quality of food. It’s all worth it, for the most part. Maybe don’t wait four hours for brunch in Portland, but forty-five minutes to an hour pass by faster than you’d think.

Clearly, there are plenty of places to eat brunch in Portland that I haven’t mentioned, but the brunch spots I’ve listed have some of the best food I’ve eaten in my life. People visiting Portland should definitely give these restaurants a try. In fact, try any brunch in Portland at all. Whatever you order, I’m sure it’ll be delicious, as food is often an experience in Portland, Oregon.

Mt. Hood Summer Getaway https://www.mommytravels.net/mt-hood-summer-getaway/ Thu, 28 Sep 2023 19:26:35 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=42862

The Drive Up the Mountain

The summer was still ongoing, at the time, so we decided on a quick trip to the mountain. By evening, we had all our bags packed and ready to go. Everyone hopped in the car, and we drove out of the neighborhood. We were surprised to find that the place we were staying was far past Skibowl and Timberline Lodge. The drive was a little over an hour, and we listened to plenty of music all the while. Mountain roads are very windy, and we found ourselves off-roading at one point.

I was happy to be given the passenger seat on this drive in particular because we were hurrying to make it to dinner on time. You cannot order dinner later than eight o’clock in the tavern at the Cooper Spur Mountain Resort. I don’t exactly enjoy driving through the mountains so much. There’s always a feeling of worry in the back of my brain. Perhaps we’ll go flying straight off the mountain this time around, I thought. My brain can come up with very illogical things. Although I couldn’t help being a total worrywart, I was at least comfortable in the passenger seat. We were driving a Rav4 Adventure at the time, and there was quite a bit of legroom in the front.

rav4

The sun was setting as we neared the Cooper Spur Mountain Resort, and we got quite the view. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to stop and take pictures while the mountain was golden and glowing. This may be the first time I’ve driven up Mt. Hood at such a pretty time of day. I can’t remember seeing the mountain so beautiful before.  As the gold faded into shadow, I wondered how much further we would have to drive. We had entered strange new regions long before sunset, but the drive continued at the will of the GPS.

I had been very zoned out of the drive and much more focused on the music when we arrived at the Cooper Spur Mountain Resort. We hopped out of the car, a bit tired, each of us wearing warm clothing. It had been a while since I wore a sweater, especially one so thick and fuzzy.

Cooper Spur Mountain ResortCrooked Tree Tavern at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort

It was getting darker now, but there was still some light left. My family and I walked down the path to the tavern and walked in the door. We were seated in the corner and handed adult menus, as well as a few kid’s menus. Although ordered off the adult menu, I did fill in the coloring sheet. It didn’t make much sense because there was no green. I colored the bushes dark purple and gave the trees a fall color scheme. Perhaps it looked insane, but that’s okay.

After dinner, we walked back to the car and moved it down the lot, closer to our room. We saw some cabins here and there. Some of the rooms were not separate cabins, but several cabins within a large connected stretch of cabins. A building inside of a building. I’m not sure how else I could explain it. We were pulling our luggage out of the trunk when we noticed that the door to one of the rooms was swung wide open. It was the room at the very end of the building. There were no lights on inside, and we could not see far past the door. My brothers and I joked that there was a murderer in the cabin, until we realized that it was labeled room number eight. The creepy murder cabin was the cabin we would be staying in.

We hesitantly walked through the open door and flicked on the lights. It appeared very nice, but I didn’t even consider this until after we’d checked the whole cabin for creeps. There was nobody. The housekeepers must have left the door open by accident.

Cooper Spur Mountain Resort

First Floor of the Cabin

There were two large couches on the first floor, that I believe could have folded out into beds. There was also a t.v., and a coffee table. Past the living room was a kitchen and a hallway to two different bedrooms. Each of the bedrooms was fairly large, containing what must have been queen or king-sized beds, as well as closet space. There was a single bathroom on the first floor.

Second Floor of the Cabin

If you climbed the stairs to the second floor, you would find four small beds, and another bathroom. This is where Jonah and I slept, while Noah and my mom slept in the downstairs bedrooms. The beds were cozy, although I think some people might be too tall to sleep in the upstairs beds.

There was plenty of room on both floors, and the cabin could have fit at least eight people, with each of them getting a separate bed or couch. It was much nicer than what we’d expected, and we definitely should have brought some board games. We’ll make sure to grab some if we ever go back.

Two Hot Tubs

Everyone changed into bathing suits, and we walked down to the area where they held the hot tubs. It was very dark out, and thoughts of woodland axe murderers crept into my brain again. Something about being so far from everything else was very creepy to me. We joked that if you were murdered up there, nobody would ever know, and nobody would ever find you. With that in mind, we walked by the light of streetlamps to the fence that enclosed the hot tubs.

My mom opened the gate, and we all through off our sweaters and kicked off our flip-flops. We hung our clothes on hooks and placed our shoes against the wall. There were multiple other people in the hot tubs. There was not enough room for all of us in either of the two hot tubs, so we split up.

My mom and I ended up in a large hot tub with a Spanish family that lives in Bend, Oregon. They chatted with us for a bit, but they eventually left. My brothers walked over and got in the hot tub Mom and I were in. They reported that the other was not as spacious or warm.

Eventually, we tired of hot tubbing and walked back to the room. We changed into comfy pajamas and chatted in bed, finally going to sleep beneath the covers.

Breakfast

The grounds of the Cooper Spur Mountain Resort were beautiful in the morning. The grass was wet with dew and the daylight made everything a lot less creepy, although it was still chilly on the mountain.

We entered the tavern once more and grabbed paper plates. My family and I grabbed fruits and freshly baked pastries, eating them in the same corner of the tavern where we had dinner the night before. There was also cereal, but I wasn’t very hungry at the time.

When everybody had finished their pastries, we exited the tavern. Just outside were picnic tables with Jenga and Yahtzee. We played Jenga for a bit and then walked back to our cabin to pack up.Cooper Spur Mountain Resort hotel

Mt. Hood Meadows Scenic Ski LiftMt. Hood Meadows chair lift

We threw our luggage in the trunk of the car and drove off to Mt. Hood Meadows. Everyone dressed in sweatshirts and coats because it was bound to be cold at the top of the Scenic Ski Lift. Our trek down the mountain began, and I nervously sat in the passenger seat once more as we speedily wound down Mt. Hood. Half the time, I wasn’t quite sure we were going the right way, and I believe we took one or two wrong turns, but we somehow ended up at Mt. Hood Meadows.

I pulled an extra coat from my suitcase when we arrived and threw it on over my sweatshirt. I assumed that the layers would work, but I soon found out that I was wrong.

My family and I ventured up the steps to the main building and got our tickets. We walked down the path over to the only running ski lift and hopped on. As we rose, the temperature dropped and dropped some more. I was doing okay, but I was still cold. My mom and I shrugged on our hoods and turned our heads to watch the main building grow smaller.

A Great Place for Hiking and PhotosMt. Hood

The view was great, although we knew it would be better on the way down when we were facing the bottom of the mountain. I snapped a few photos on the way up, but I actually didn’t keep any of these. The cords of the ski lift ended up in the corner of each photo, and it was just too dark. Luckily, I also got a couple of photos on the way down that turned out much better, especially because the sun was finally starting to overcome the grey clouds.

At the end of the ride, we lifted the safety bar and scooted to the front of our seats, so we could comfortably hop off the lift. We took a path through a line of trees that wasn’t actually a gravel path, but it was a shortcut to the area we wanted to get too. I also got a number of decent pictures along this path.

Hiking around Mt. Hood MeadowsMy younger brother Jonah had forgotten to bring a jacket, so he was hiking alongside us in nothing but a long-sleeve shirt. At first, he tried to wait out the cold and get over it, but I eventually ended up giving him my fleece. If I was chilly within three layers of shirts and sweaters, I’m sure he was much colder.

Our path eventually crossed with a large gravel path that led us to a number of great photo spots. It was very quiet and peaceful at the top of the lift. I think the loudest noises within the area came from my brothers’ mouths. We continued walking around for a while, but we eventually returned to the lift.dead trip up on Mt. Hood

As I mentioned before, the view was even better on the way down. The sun came out and brightened the day, and we didn’t have to turn our heads all the way around to look down at the mountain. The lodge grew closer and closer as we took in the glorious view. We finally made it to the bottom and entered the main building once more.

Lunch at the Schuss GrillLunch at the Schuss Grill

The Schuss Grill is located inside the main building at Mt. Hood Meadows. This is where we ate our lunch. They had a selection of sandwiches and other foods. I ordered a vegan sandwich. It was okay, but it was a bit cold. I’m certain it would have tasted much better if it hadn’t been lukewarm. The sandwich also came with chips and a cookie. Although they were packaged cookies, they were actually really good. My mom claimed that the salted caramel kind was the best cookie she had ever eaten. It was good, although I’m not sure if I agree with her. I’m more of a chocolate chip person myself.cornhole at Schuss Grill

Outside of the building, you could play cornhole. Just before leaving the Mt. Hood Meadows, my family and I stopped to play. We didn’t really count points or take any of it seriously, but we still had a good time.

At the end of it all, we climbed back into the car and shed our extra jackets and sweaters. Everyone was happy to be warm again, and we continued our drive down the winding roads of Mt. Hood.

11 Best Things to Do Near Crater Lake https://www.mommytravels.net/things-to-do-near-crater-lake/ Sun, 30 Jul 2023 11:05:00 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=41865 Located in the heart of Southern Oregon is Crater Lake National Park. A lake that is so brilliantly blue and shockingly big, it will take your breath away.

While exploring the park itself is an obvious must-do, there are also plenty of incredible activities to enjoy in the surrounding area.

In this post, we’ll list the best things to do near Crater Lake. From waterfalls to hot springs to kayaking to wine country, there’s more than enough to keep you busy for a few days!

Explore Toketee FallsToketee Falls

You can hike to one of Oregon’s most popular waterfalls just under an hour’s drive from the entrance to Crater Lake. Toketee Falls cascades over 113 feet over basalt columns and makes for a spectacular stop.

The trail to the waterfall is just 0.8 miles round trip with 170 feet of elevation gain. Most of the trail is up and down built-in staircases, making the hike a bit easier.

If you’re feeling brave and have hiking shoes with good grip, you can venture down to the pool of water beneath the falls. There is an unmaintained trail that leads you down there, with the use of a rope strung along the trees. Use extra care as the route is extremely steep and slippery!

Hike to Watson FallsWatson Falls

Just a few miles down the road from Toketee Falls is Watson Falls. The trail to Watson Falls is a 1 mile loop hike with 360 feet of elevation gain.

Watson Falls is the third tallest waterfall in Oregon at 272 feet high. This waterfall also cascades over basalt columns like the nearby Toketee Falls. There is a wooden bridge along the route that will put you right over the lower rapids with a great view of the waterfall.

The trail leading up to the falls is in the lush dense forest, and the surrounding rocks at the waterfall are green and moss covered, making it a picture perfect PNW spot!

Soak in the Umpqua Hot SpringsUmpqua Hot Springs in Oregon

Umpqua Hot Springs is along the same forest road as both Toketee Falls and Watson Falls, so combining these stops makes for a perfect day trip from Crater Lake.

Umpqua Hot Springs are a set of 7 natural hot pools in a beautiful forest along the Umpqua River. Soaking in the hot springs while hearing the river rushing below is a serene, unique experience that you should add to your itinerary!

The hike to the hot springs is less than 1 mile round trip, but steep with 305 feet of elevation gain. It’s recommended to hike in shoes with good grip and change into your bathing suit beforehand as there is no place for privacy at the springs. And don’t forget a towel to dry off after your soak!

Note these springs are clothing optional. Be sure to leave no trace and don’t wear any lotions or perfumes while soaking in the hot springs since they are a fragile ecosystem.

11 Best Oregon Hot Springs

Take a scenic driveCrater Lake

Oregon is chock full of scenic byways. Whether you’re cruising down the coast, driving around Mount Hood, or want to explore their lesser visited desert- Oregon has plenty of scenic drives for you to explore.

The Rogue – Umpqua Scenic Byway is 172 miles long and takes you through Crater Lake, Diamond Lake, and the Umpqua National Forest. Some of the highlights include Toketee Falls and Umpqua Hot Springs listed above. This is the perfect scenic byway if you have a long weekend to explore!

If you’re interested in a long road trip through Southern Oregon and Northern California, consider the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. This 500 mile journey starts in Crater Lake and takes you through Lava Beds National Monument, Mount Shasta, and all the way down to Mount Lassen National Park.

And if you have even more time to explore from Crater Lake, the Oregon Coast Scenic Byway is tough to beat. The drive to the coast will take you almost 4 hours, but even if you only have time to explore the Southern Oregon Coast it will be well worth it.bandon-beach-oregon

The town of Bandon on the coast is closest to Crater Lake and has Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint. There are coastal sea stacks and rocks galore, and the sunsets are magical.

Go ziplining

Crater Lake Zipline

Crater Lake Zipline

During the months of March- November, thrill seekers can go ziplining through Crater Lake ZipLine, located an 1 hour & 15 minute drive South from the National Park.

Ages 10 and over can embark on an epic canopy tour with 9 ziplines, walk on 2 suspension bridges, and do some rappelling. You’ll get amazing views of Mount McLoughlin, Upper Klamath Lake, and the surrounding Cascade Mountains making this even more special.

If you’re looking for more to do, they also offer a kayaking tour on Wood River that you can combine with the ziplining tour for a full day adventure.

They also have axe-throwing onsite which makes for a fun night or afternoon out. There is food available from Sassy’s Kitchen, with local brews on tap.

Hike to Lemolo Falls

Lemolo Falls is an easy-moderate trail in the Umpqua National Forest, 1 hour North of Crater Lake. The hike is 3.4 miles round trip with 380 feet of elevation gain.

The trail will take you along the Umpqua River and features colorful wildflowers in the spring and early summer.

You’ll find a few waterfalls and waterfall views along the hike, and some spots in the river that serve as swimming holes where you can cool off in the summertime!

Go on a clear kayaking tour of Spring Creek

Go on a unique paddling tour with Sky Lakes Wildnerness Adventures to Spring Creek. They offer a clear bottom kayaking tour so you can view right down to the bottom of the crystal clear waters. The water here is so clear since, as the name suggests, it is spring fed!

Glide through the waters and feel like you’re just floating right across, as you watch for eagles and other birds that may be overhead.

They offer the 4 mile paddling tour 7 days a week, with 9:30 am and 1:30 pm departures available.

Explore Upper Klamath Lake & Klamath Falls

About one hour South of Crater Lake is Upper Klamath Lake, the largest freshwater lake West of the Rockies. Get out on the lake by renting a kayak, or going fishing.

During the spring months, hiking the Hogback Mountain trail is a must. It is difficult and steep at times. But the trail pops with bright colors of lupines, daisies, and more wildflowers that make the climb well worth it.Running Y Resort in Klamath Falls

The town of Klamath Falls sits at the Southern tip of the lake. Stay at the popular Running Y Resort, with an 18-hole golf course onsite, an indoor swimming pool, a fire pit, and more.

Head to Diamond Lake

Diamond Lake is the closest destination to Crater Lake, as it is only a 15-minute drive from the park’s North entrance.

The Diamond Lake Resort is located here, which has loads of fun summer activities and multiple lodging options. There is a motel onsite, as well as many cozy cabins for rent. Their lodge restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and there is a pizza parlor with lake views.

During the summer months, you can go horseback riding, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and kayaking. You can also rent a boat for a relaxing day out on the water.

Diamond Lake is also a great spot in the winter since the resort sees a lot of snow! There are snowshoe and cross-country skiing trails as well as snow tubing and snowmobiling offered.

Hike to Mill & Barr Creek Falls

The trailhead to Mill & Barr Creek Falls is just 25 minutes Southwest of Crater Lake. A great two-for-one waterfall hike, this trail is a hidden gem in the area.

The hike for both is 1.5 miles round trip with 215 feet of elevation gain, is considered easy, and can be accessed year round. The trail is family and dog friendly, just pay extra attention to your pups and small children since there are some exposed areas with steep cliffs and drop offs.

Mill Creek Falls stands at 173 feet tall, and Barr Creek Falls plunges 240 feet, making this trail one of the best things to do near Crater Lake.

For those that are able and looking for an extra adventure, you can scramble down to the base of Mill Creek Falls for a different perspective.

Visit Rogue Valley’s Wine Country

Rogue Valley is situated between Crater Lake and Oregon’s Southern Coast. The majority of the wine region is about a 2 hour drive Southwest of Crater Lake. There are over 150 wineries in this scenic region, so you will not run out of options!

Rogue Valley produces many different variations of wine, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc.

There are tons of year round events in the wine country, from live outdoor music, sip and paint parties, and harvest festivals in the fall.

The Upper Rogue Valley wineries are the closest to Crater Lake, and include Kriselle Cellars, Cliff Creek Cellars, and Del Rio Vineyard Estate. Each of the wineries have spectacular views, are highly rated, and surprisingly affordable. A tasting at Del Rio Vineyards is just 10$ a person.

The Hummingbird Estate is a fantastic bed and breakfast to stay at while visiting Rogue Valley. You’ll have mountain and garden views, plus access to their winery onsite!

The Wrap Up: 11 of the Best Things to Do Near Crater Lake

And there you have it, 11 of the best things to do near Crater Lake!

Crater Lake is located in a rather remote area of central Southern Oregon, but don’t fret since now you’ve got a list of even more things to do around the National Park.

Oregon is so diverse, holding the deepest lake in the U.S. and hot springs, waterfalls, wineries, and more all located nearby. So, which places are you adding to your itinerary?

Top 13 Family Friendly Things to do in Eugene Oregon https://www.mommytravels.net/things-to-do-in-eugene-oregon/ https://www.mommytravels.net/things-to-do-in-eugene-oregon/#comments Wed, 26 Apr 2023 13:14:25 +0000 http://www.mommytravels.net/?p=8621 Eugene, Oregon is less than 2 hours south of Portland, Oregon, and a super family-friendly city. Eugene is home to the Oregon Ducks and a massive college town, but don’t let that deter you there are so many family-friendly things to do in Eugene.

We find ourselves down in Eugene at least once a year for Noah’s gymnastics meets. Each time we are in the city we find another fun thing to do or a new restaurant we like. Here are some of the things we have enjoyed doing and a few places we like to eat at.

13 Things to do in Eugene with Kids

Skinner Butte Park

The whole park is awesome, but it’s the massive playground here that’s our favorite thing to do in Eugene. Skinner Butte Park is a sprawling park along the river. It features an area where people rock climb, extensive bike paths and it has an incredible playground for kids. Here is a short video I took at the playground to give you a better idea and what to expect.

Bike Riding

Eugene is one of the most bike-friendly communities in the Pacific Northwest with bike paths everywhere. The bike paths are a great way to see some of the beautiful sites in the area without traffic worries. Kids love the extensive bike bridges that connect to paths on both sides of the Willamette River.

Along the paths, kids can also see lots of wildlife including blue herons, egrets, and pond turtles. There are several outfits in town that rent bikes and deliver to whichever hotel you stay in. I recommend going with a larger rental company, so they don’t cancel.

Cascades Raptor Center

Something truly unique in this area is the Cascades Raptor Center. Located near Eugene is a special wildlife rehabilitation and public education center. You can walk through the grounds along forested hillside trails to get close up views of eagles, owls, falcons and many other raptors. It’s located in the South Eugene hills very close to a popular urban trail known as the Ridgeline Trail—yet another popular bike trail  and park for families.

Level Up Arcade

Level Up Arcade is an old school arcade in downtown Eugene, Oregon that allows minors until 9 PM. Parents can enjoy a cocktail while kids play one of the 25 pinball machines

Get Air Eugene Trampoline Park

All kids will enjoy coming here to bounce around. They have an area for bigger kids and one for smaller kids. There’s a foam pit and an area where you can play dodgeball. Prices vary quite a bit so check their website.

Trap Door Escape Room

Escape rooms are pretty fun. The kids and I made it out with 3 minutes left! Everything in the room is in there for a reason and it’s up to your and your family to figure out the clues, puzzles, locks, and more to escape.

Putter’s Family Entertainment Center

Putter’s Family Entertainment Center has an assortment of fun things to do for families, including mini-golf, laser tag, an indoor playground, an arcade, pool tables, and pizza.  They open at 11 am daily and laser tag opens at 4pm Monday through Thursday.

Fidgets 2 Widgets

Fidgets 2 Widgets is an activity center based around STEM education. They offer all kinds of interesting programs that your kids are sure to love. Here your kids can learn about math and science using Minecraft or they can take a class on something else that piques their interest like Youtube, Javascripts, Japanese Amine, and many more.

5th Street Public Market

The 5th Street Public Market located in the heart of downtown Eugene is a shopping destination with an assortment of shops. It is fun to explore and it’s full of family-friendly eateries.

Tiny Toys Indoor Playground

For those with toddlers this is a nice safe, indoor place to play out of the rain. There’s not too much to it, but when your kids are this little it doesn’t really matter.

Catch a Game

With Eugene being the home of the Oregon Ducks chances are high that you can catch a football game, basketball game, or even a track meet.

The Science Factory

The Science Factory is a children’s museum and planetarium. Kids can learn and there’s a special room just for toddlers called the Tot Spot.

Demolition Zone

Rage out in their rage room where you and your family can break stuff. Now this may sound odd but just take my word for it, it is crazy fun. Kids have to be at least 13. Located at 4075 Franklin Blvd, Eugene, OR 97403.

If you are looking for even more to do while you are in Eugene I also recommend checking out the Kids’ Adventure Club www.EugeneCascadesCoast.org. There they can provide you with suggested activities for the specific dates you are in town!

Alvord Hot Springs, Harney County, Southeast Oregon

Alvord Hot Springs is surrounded by the diverse landscape of the Steens Mountains and Alvord Desert. Since it is private property, you will have to pay $5 to enjoy the two hot water pools. These pools have a rich history as they date back to the 1940s and have been modernized over time.

One of the hot springs is a small, enclosed man-made one, while the other offers a more natural setting. The temperature of both pools fluctuate between 100 to 110 degrees. Thanks to two hot and cold water pipes feeding the pool, you can adjust the water’s condition according to your liking.

Bagby, Clackamas County

Driving three hours from Portland towards Mount Hood National Forest will bring you to the Bagby Hot Springs. Multiple tall coniferous trees surround the area in a trail of 1.4 miles. And, a secluded branch from Clackamas River adds to the picturesque view.

The springs here are enclosed in hollow cedar tubs, which feel similar to a bathhouse. Both upper and lower bathhouses contain a 6 feet round tub in an open deck.

Shower Creek, a secluded camping spot, is just a few miles past the hot springs and offers a unique backcountry camping experience if you are planning an overnight stay. Bagby Hot Springs

Paulina Hot Springs, Newberry Volcanic Monument

These hot springs are two miles away from Paulina Lake. There are some stunning landscapes to explore along the terrain that makes the walk worth it. If you want a more picturesque experience in Deschutes National Park, then embarking on the alternative 7.5 miles hike, the Paulina Lake Hot Springs Trail, is a perfect option.

The five natural springs here are exposed to waves from the lake, which bring the water temperature to optimal. It ranges from 90 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit on average. To experience this volcanic beauty’s night view, you can camp nearby at the Little Crater Campgrounds.

Paulina Hot Springs

Terwilliger Hot Springs

Terwilliger Hot Springs is nestled in the heart of Willamette National Forest. If you hear locals refer to Cougar Hot Springs, don’t be alarmed – these pools get their name from the water source, Rider Creek, which eventually flows into Cougar Reservoir. Just a quick 0.5 km stroll from Forest Service Road 19, or Aufderheide Memorial Drive, and you’ll be transported to a paradise of natural geothermal pools. It’s time to relax and enjoy the healing power of Mother Nature.

Bottom Line:

In addition to their therapeutic benefits, hot springs are also one of the wonderful ways to connect with nature and enjoy scenic views. Pack your bags, grab your swimsuit, and embark on an adventure to discover the best Oregon Hot Springs.

Where to Stay in Portland

17 Romantic restaurants in Portland Oregon

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! My second favorite site to find flights is Momondo, another great site for finding cheap flights.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO.

Rent Clothes

Rent clothes for your trip with Travel Style Expert for only $50 a month! The first 30 days are free!

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Get Your Guide and Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If I am going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Take a Lyft

More often than not Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Discover Cars.
