Actually, most meals in Portland are an experience. The people of Portland take lots of pride in their amazing food and the ingredients within their food. It’s a land of deliciousness, and breakfast in Portland is not to be missed out on. There are just so many breakfast places to choose from, each of them an individual delight.

Aside from the outright awesomeness of the food served up, there are a couple of other factors that add to the Portland breakfast experience. Not only do these restaurants take pride in their food, but they take pride in their appearance. Most of the breakfast places I’ve visited are cool and cute. Portland is absolutely stuffed with restaurants and shops decorated in a very rustic fashion.

Although eating breakfast in Portland is rather enjoyable, there’s also a bad side to this experience. You may or may not have heard jokes about Portlanders waiting ridiculous amounts of time, just to eat Sunday brunch. I’m here to tell you that this is absolutely true. Breakfast in Portland is incredibly popular due to how delicious it is. For that reason, the lines are always pretty long, especially at more well-known places. Even when the wait for Portland brunch is multiple hours, Portlanders stick it out for a tasty meal. If you’ve got nothing to do on the particular day of your brunch, then that’s fine. If you need to be somewhere after your Sunday brunch in Portland, then there’s a problem.

All of these things are key parts of the Portland breakfast experience that is often so good, but sometimes so very aggravating.

East Portland

Screen Door Beverage

Screen Door

If you’re a local to the area, it’s likely that you’ve been to Screen Door brunch, or you’ve walked past it. You’ve probably also seen the ridiculously long line that goes out the door, collects in a mass on the corner and goes on down the street. Although they are a full-time restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, their weekend brunch is very popular.

My mother took me on a little brunch date to the Screen Door a couple of years ago. Many people waiting in the cold outside were highly envious of our ability to waltz right in, due to our reservation. Of course, the line for the Screen Door isn’t too bad. It looks slightly worse than it actually is because the waiting area inside simply isn’t that big. Other than that, the staff does a good job of getting hungry people in and satisfied customers out.

The seating area inside was slightly cramped, but I couldn’t complain. How else were they supposed to fit in all those eager customers? Besides, it wasn’t that bad. The restaurant was decorated nice and smelled of delicious food. We picked up our menus, stirred by the amazing smells all around us. I indulged in the hot chocolate pictured above. It was the best hot chocolate I’ve consumed in my life, mainly because of the fantastic homemade whipped cream.

bananas foster french toast Screen Door

The Screen Door has a great number of delicious menu items, including biscuits and gravy, chicken and waffles, and a whole slew of other amazing foods. It was very hard for my mother and I to decide on what we wanted, and I eventually settled on the Cathead Biscuit Sandwich. They call it that because it’s made with a biscuit “the size of a cat’s head.” Sure enough, my meal arrived, and it was gigantic.

Brunch Aftermath…

The meal I had at brunch that day was the largest amount of food I have ever eaten. I just kept eating because it was so good. As it turns out, that much food is too much for a short, tween girl’s body to handle, and you can probably guess what happened next. Has anyone else eaten so much that they puked? It was absolutely worth it, and I still had some leftovers. To sum it up, I was very happy with my Sunday Portland brunch date.

Tusk

Tusk

Tusk

Tusk is a Middle Eastern food restaurant in East Portland that also serves brunch. My family hardly had to wait at all, and we were quickly seated at a table for four. Their brunch menu is slightly smaller than that of Screen Door, but it was tasty and unique.

We decided to order a couple of appetizers, including the hummus plate. Everybody ate quite a lot leading up to our actual brunch. There was plenty of time for me to admire the neat decorations of the restaurant, and peer around to see what other people had ordered. I had ordered yet another biscuit-based meal, the biscuits and gravy. My mother ordered a grain bowl, that she claims was delicious. I was satisfied yet again with brunch in Portland. The biscuits and gravy turned out to be a pretty good choice.

Fried Egg I’m in Love

Egg Sandwich at Fried Egg I'm in Love

Fried Egg I’m In Love has been enchanting the taste buds of Portland’s hungry and sleepy masses since 2012 with their delicious musically-inspired fried egg sandwiches. Picture this: eggs sourced from local farms, cooked to perfection over-medium, and adorned with the tantalizing Magic Egg Dust, their very own special spice blend. Everything started from the creative mind of chef and owner Jace Krause, who fused his passion for owning a business, love for breakfast food, cooking, and music to give birth to Fried Egg I’m In Love.

Now, let’s talk about their menu. Prepare to have your taste buds serenaded by ridiculously tasty classic and inventive breakfast sandwiches. From the legendary Yolko Ono to the rockin’ Egg Zeppelin, the fiery Sriracha Mix-A-Lot, and the rebellious Free-Range Against The Machine, each sandwich has a name as imaginative as its flavors. Hungry yet?

Hungry Portlanders can find Fried Egg I’m In Love in two locations. First, a vibrant yellow food cart awaits you in Downtown Portland’s bustling Pioneer Courthouse Square. And as of January 2019, they expanded to a brick-and-mortar 30-seat diner-style restaurant on SE Hawthorne Blvd and 35th. Brace yourself for a breakfast experience that will leave you longing for more.

Downtown Portland

Hunny Milk

The first time we ate brunch at Hunny Milk, it was merely a small pop up within another restaurant. It was close to Screen Door and Tusk. It hadn’t really been discovered yet, and there was practically nobody there. Each item on the menu sounded fantastic, and we quickly found out that they were, indeed, fantastic. Each tray held a beautiful, delicious food that each of us would happily eat time and time again.

Now, Hunny Milk has been recognized by citizens as a wonderful place to eat brunch in Portland. There is now an actual Hunny Milk restaurant, as well as the pop up. We decided to eat at their new restaurant near Downtown Portland this time.

The Good and the Bad

The new Hunny Milk has a nice and comfortable waiting area. It is quite large, with multiple squishy couches, bean bag chairs, books, magazines, and board games. All of this seemed great, until an hour and a half passed by. Remembering that the staff had told us the wait would only be forty-five minutes, my mother asked how much longer the wait would be. This time, the employee said that it should be another thirty minutes. At this point, my family felt as if we couldn’t give up on brunch because we had already waited so long.

Brunch at Hunny Milk

Finally, we got a table. Two and a half hours had passed since we arrived. We ordered quickly; biscuits with chorizo gravy for everyone, a couple of funnel cakes, a waffle, and a crepe. Excited for our food, we sat in our booth and waited some more. A whole hour passed before we were finally greeted with the satisfactory smells of biscuits, gravy, and funnel cake.

The food looked great, smelled great, and tasted even better. This did not make us any less bothered by the absolutely insane total wait time of three and half hours. It did fill our empty stomachs that hadn’t been tended to all day. After that painful wait, I got to eat the best biscuits and gravy I’ve ever had, plus a fantastic gourmet funnel cake. I still can’t decide if it was worth it, but I do know that Hunny Milk needs to optimize their staff and dining space.

Brunch Aftermath…

In the end, our food from Hunny Milk was some of the best I’ve ever consumed. Yes, the wait time crushed our Sunday brunch excitement quite a bit, but we stayed strong and had patience. I think it’s safe to say we’ve become true Portlanders at this point. Perhaps brunch in Portland isn’t to die for, or to wait several hours for, but that’s just how things worked out.

North Portland

Gravy Brunch

Gravy

Gravy is another great place to eat brunch in Portland. I’ve eaten there twice, both times due to hospital visits. The first time, I was getting a cast for my hand. We ended up at the hospital a while later for my brother. Although both brunch dates were a result of slightly bad occurrences, they were highly enjoyable.

Because the hospital we ended up at was in Portland, my mother and I decided to get brunch after the appointment. We hadn’t really tried a lot of the brunch in this particular area, so we walked down the street and gave Gravy a try. Gravy is a cute brunch place with some interesting artwork and rustic decor. By interesting, I mean weird paintings of caricatures and other such art.

Mom ordered an appetizer of oatmeal, as well as an order of the chili verde. I was less adventurous with my taste in food at that time, and went with a stack of pancakes. Although rather boring in comparison to the great number of other wonderful foods, the pancakes were actually quite good, possibly some of the best I’ve ever eaten. Mom enjoyed her chili verde, and I even stole a few bites because it looked so good.

Broder NordBroder Söder

You can experience a delightful Scandinavian breakfast and lunch at this trendy spot. Indulge in traditional Nordic staples and savor aquavit in a stylish ambiance. What sets this place apart is its availability of breakfast seven days a week, perfect for adding a touch of magic to your mornings. Start your culinary journey with a shared plate of aebleskiver, delectable Danish pancakes accompanied by zesty lemon curd and tangy lingonberry jam (pictured above). For something savory, we recommend the Swedish baked eggs and smoked trout hash. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to their North location; Broder has additional spots in Southeast and Southwest Portland, ensuring you won’t miss out on this incredible experience. (There’s even one in Hood River.)

Breakfast in Portland…

After all of these spectacular brunch experiences, I have no doubt in my mind that Portland brunch is worth the try. The food is delightful every time. Yes, wait times can be a pain, but if you book a reservation or arrive early enough, they aren’t so bad. If not, stick it out like a true Portlander. Pricing for most of these places is logical, considering the high quality of food. It’s all worth it, for the most part. Maybe don’t wait four hours for brunch in Portland, but forty-five minutes to an hour pass by faster than you’d think.

Clearly, there are plenty of places to eat brunch in Portland that I haven’t mentioned, but the brunch spots I’ve listed have some of the best food I’ve eaten in my life. People visiting Portland should definitely give these restaurants a try. In fact, try any brunch in Portland at all. Whatever you order, I’m sure it’ll be delicious, as food is often an experience in Portland, Oregon.

11 Best Bloody Marys in Portland https://www.mommytravels.net/10-best-bloody-marys-in-portland/ https://www.mommytravels.net/10-best-bloody-marys-in-portland/#comments Thu, 03 Nov 2022 19:46:25 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=18774 We’ve found the best Bloody Marys in Portland, Oregon.

For those that love Bloody Marys the worst thing is ending up with one that’s watered down. Lucky for you, we are always on the hunt for a solid Bloody Mary. We’ve found some incredible ones in Portland.  I checked around to see if I could find a Bloody Mary tour in Portland you can take, but as of now I have not found one. However, you can easily use this list to create your own tour! Portland does have a Bloody Mary Festival typically during a warmer month.

Top 11 Portland Bloody Marys

Podnah’sPodnah's Bloody Mary

The Bloody Mary at Podnah’s was so fantastic it inspired this entire post. Okay, I’ll admit it, I am biased because it’s a very Texas type restaurant with BBQ and Mexican food options for weekend brunch. But regardless, their Bloody Mary just about knocked my socks off. It was so spicy I wasn’t able to finish it. I don’t mind having heartburn for days as long as it’s worth it and this one is totally worth it.

Located in the Alberta district at 1625 NE Killingsworth Portland Oregon 97211.

Q RestaurantA Bloody Mary at Q Restaurant

I stumbled upon Q Restaurant on a cold day and warming up with a Bloody Mary, grilled cheese, and a bowl of tomato soup was pretty much perfect. Their “OLD SCHOOL” MARY is a made with Beet Infused Rose City Vodka or Portland Hot Potato Habanero vodka, house-made Bloody Mary Mix, and pickled veggies. Q also has delicious breakfast options, I just happened to have been having lunch the day I visited.

Located at 828 SW Second Ave. Portland, OR 97204.

La Petite Provence

La Petite Provence bloody mary

La Petite Provence has special house-infused pepper vodka in case you want your Bloody Mary super spicy. Their spicy Mary pairs perfectly with the Risotto cakes. They serve nothing but yummy food here, so it would probably go great with anything. They also offer Bloody Mary flights. I haven’t tried one yet, so I can’t speak to how good it may or may not be. They’ve got locations all over the Portland area including on Alberta Street, Burnside and on Division near 50th.

Pine State Biscuits

Pine State Biscuits Bloody Mary

Pine State Biscuits has an awesome Bloody Mary topped with a delicious little corn dog. It’s got a bit of kick, but next time I would order it with even more spice. This Bloody Mary won the people’s choice award at Portland’s Bloody Mary Festival. Sadly, I didn’t attend this festival because I didn’t know about it. Pine State Biscuits is a popular spot, so you can expect to stand in line for a bit before getting in.

Slappy CakesSlappy Cakes Bloody Mary

Slappy Cakes is certainly not known for their cocktails, but the last time we dined here I discovered that they’ve got a delicious Bloody Mary. It certainly helped me choke down my kid’s pancake creations! Located at 4246 SE Belmont St, Portland, OR 97215

McMenaminsMcMenamins Powerhouse Pub Bloody Mary

Depending on which McMenamins you visit there may be a slight variation. But for the most part, I’ve found them to be similar at most locations. They are spicy, but not too spicy. If you like yours with a lot of kick be sure to let them know. The one pictured here is from the Loading Dock, part of the Edgefield and my favorite spot out east of Portland. The Loading Dock is all outdoor seating so keep that in mind if you are wanting to visit. Remember to get your McMenamins passport stamped while you are there!

HarlowBloody Mary at Harlow in Portland

Harlow is another place that is definitely not known for the cocktails, but their Bloody Mary is excellent. It goes perfectly alongside their vegan/vegetarian food options like the jackfruit rancheros. Located at 3632 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214.

Genie’s Cafe

Scorpion Bloody Mary at Genie's Cafe in Portland, Oregon

Genie’s Cafe has three delicious Bloody Marys to go along with your Saturday brunch. They are all good, although one is a little insane. It’s the Scorpion Bloody Mary made with Trinidad maruga scorpion pepper {the world’s hottest} infused vodka & their own bloody Mary mix. Garnished with a skewer of pineapple, peppadew, pepperoncini, a celery stick, Thai seasoned rim & a real scorpion! If that’s not the most innovative Bloody Marys you’ve ever heard of, I am going to need to hear about the one you experienced in the comments below! Located at 1101 Southeast Division Street, Portland, OR 97202.

EastBurn Public House

EastBurn Public House Bloody Mary

It’s no secret that I like Eastburn Public House. I typically head there for a prickly pear margarita, but recently a friend talked me into a Bloody Mary and holy moly, how have I got this long without this! They have three different types of Bloody Marys to choose from including one with fried chicken and a biscuit. The nice thing is they offer all kinds of ways to upgrade your drink. For example you can pick out your choice of vodka like Monopolowa vodka.

Located at 1800 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214.

Cafe Nell

Cafe Nell Bloody Mary

They’ve got a good looking one, The Mary Nell, their house bloody mary with skewers of shrimp, chorizo, cheese & pickled vegetables.

Located in NW Portland at 1987 NW Kearney Street Portland, Or 97209.

CanardCanards Bloody Mary

If I’m honest Canard didn’t make the top ten because it wasn’t spicy at all. However, if you can’t handle spice this one is for you. If you want a Bloody Mary that most definitely won’t give you heartburn this is it. You could always ask what kind of hot sauces they have on hand and kick it up a notch yourself! Located at 734 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214.

Cafe Rowan

Cafe Rowan Portland, Oregon

Cafe Rowan offers a The Bloody Mary Flight off and on throughout the year. It’s just $22 for all four.

  • Dad’s Classic Bloody Mary
  • Tomatillo + Serrano
  • Beet + Ghost Chili
  • Heirloom Carrot + Habanero

They are located at 4437 SE Cesar E. Chavez Blvd., Portland, OR 97202.

I tried to google how many hikes are there in the Columbia Gorge and could not find an answer. Although I saw one claim that said the Columbia River Gorge is home to a whopping 90 waterfalls on its Oregon side alone. I doubt the number is that high, but almost every time we head out to this area, we try a different gorge hike.

There are many waterfall hikes and hikes with incredible views of the Columbia Gorge but they are not necessarily the best for those hiking with kids. Some of the hikes we have gone on were easy for my kids while others were a struggle. I have not included any hikes that were a struggle for them. These are the 14 Best Hikes for Kids in the Columbia River Gorge I have found so far that are easy enough for kids and almost all of them include waterfalls and scenic views.

14 Best Hikes for Kids in the Columbia River Gorge

1. Punchbowl Falls

Punchbowl Falls hike

Punchbowl Falls

Punchbowl Falls hike is one of many awesome kid-friendly hikes located in the scenic Columbia gorge area and it is one of my personal favorites. If you hike past Punchbowl waterfall there are a few other waterfalls that you can see. It’s about a 45-minute drive from downtown Portland and it is appropriate for kids ages 7 and up. To learn more about this hike, read my Punchbowl Falls hike post.

2. Wahclella Falls

Wahclella Falls a waterfall in Oregon

Wahclella Falls Hike

Wahclella Falls is another fantastic hike with a waterfall and is easy for kids. We hiked this our cousins and even their 5-year-olds were able to do this hike easily. To learn more about this hike, read my Wahclella Falls post.

3. Wahkeena Falls

Wahkeena Falls

Wahkeena Falls

Wahkeena Falls is a beautiful hike. It is not much of a hike to Wahkeena Falls, but you can keep going up to the Lemmon’s Viewpoint a scenic overlook. I encourage you to keep hiking up to Fairy Falls after taking in the view.

4. Oneonta Gorge

Oneonta Gorge waterfall

Oneonta Gorge waterfall

The Oneonta Gorge is no easy hike. It is a short hike, just 1.2 miles round trip. In order to complete this hike you wade through water, climb over boulders, and shimmy across fallen trees. To learn more about this hike, read my Oneonta Gorge post.

5. Fairy Falls

Fairy Falls

Fairy Falls

Fairy Falls is past Wahkeena Falls and is totally worth the long hike. For kids, this can be tiresome. It is not as steep as Ponytail Falls hike. This hike is 2 miles round trip.

6. Bridal Veil FallsBridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls is a kid-friendly hike along the Columbia Scenic Highway 25 minutes east of Portland, OR. When you are driving along the highway from Troutdale, OR east toward Multnomah Fall, Bridal Veil will be the second waterfall you come to. It’s just after Latourell Falls.  If you would rather take I-84 out to the waterfall area, then you will take the Bridal Veil exit.

The Bridal Veil Falls hike is an easy one, less than a mile round trip. The paths are wide and it never gets terribly steep. Don’t let the paved trail deceive you at the beginning of your hike. Unlike Latourell Falls you will not be able to use a stroller, because the paved path ends and there are quite a few stairs. Be sure to keep an eye on your kids. There is a bridge to cross and then the path follows along Bridal Creek.

7. Elowah Falls

Elowah Falls

Elowah Falls

Elowah Falls is a gorgeous hike and it is extremely easy for kids. This hike is only 1.4 miles round trip. It seemed that the trail might keep going, but we only went to the waterfall and back. This hike is found off of I-84 exit 35. We did this hike the year we had no snow out here. Typically, there is a lot more water pouring.

8. Ponytail Falls

Ponytail falls ss one of many waterfalls along the scenic Columbia Gorge area in Oregon. The family-friendly hike to Ponytail Falls begins at Horse Tail Falls, about 40 minutes east of Portland off exit 3 when taking I-84.

This hike is a steep, long trail. Round-trip it’s about 1.5 miles, but you can take several different splits, including one to Triple Falls. We decided not to hike all the way to Triple Falls, because the kids were wiped out by the time we made it to the split. Kids over the age of 4 or 5 should be able to hike this trail. I do not recommend taking a stroller on this trail.

Along the Ponytail Falls hike you will be treated to beautiful views of the Columbia Gorge, Middle Oneonta waterfall, Lower Oneonta Falls, and the massive Oneonta Gorge.

There is no cost to hike Ponytail Falls and there is plenty of free parking. Nearby at Ainsworth State Park are clean bathrooms.

9. Latourell Falls

Latourell Falls is a great place to go hiking with the family and see a beautiful waterfall. It is found along the Columbia Scenic Highway, 25 minutes east of Portland, Oregon. Once you’ve visited Crown Point this will be the first waterfall you come to on the right side. There is a signage and a good size parking lot you can park at. There are also lots of picnic tables. We usually enjoy lunch here before we start hiking the waterfalls.

At Latourell Falls there are two trails for hiking. The shortest and easiest hike takes you right down to the bottom of the waterfall. The path is wide and you could push an outdoor stroller on it if you need to. Once you are at the bottom of the fall you can decide to go further taking you to a green space or turn around.

Either way, you will have to turn around at some point. The long hike is not good for strollers after a certain point. I’ve only taken it once and I’m pretty sure we got lost, so I cannot recommend taking it. It was very beautiful and we did find our way back without a problem. If you do decide to do it triple check the map and be aware of the trail splitting.

10. Falls Creek Falls

Falls Creek Falls

Falls Creek Falls (the lower part)

Falls Creek Falls is a great hike on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge. It is much further to drive too, but I think it is worth it. The trail starts at the end of Road 3062. This hike is a 3.4-mile hike round-trip if you hike to the waterfall and back out. We did not do the long hike that is available here, so I do not know if that portion is kid-friendly.

11. Angel’s Rest

Angel's Rest

Angel’s Rest

Angel’s Rest is an intense uphill hike, but you are rewarded with spectacular views of the Columbia Gorge. This hike is 4.4 miles round trip, so keep that in mind before taking kids. This hike is off I-84, take exit #28 for Bridal Veil

12. Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls covered in snow and ice

Multnomah Falls covered in snow and ice

Okay, I know what you are thinking, where is Multnomah Falls. I left out Multnomah Falls. I absolutely recommend stopping at Multnomah Falls! We stop by there all the time. In fact, I drove out there just to take pictures of it iced over when it stormed out here. You can hike to the top of Multnomah Falls and there are tons of switchbacks. It is a good hike but I would suggest not taking a child to try it until they are at least 7.

13. Hole in the Wall FallsHole in the Wall Falls

Hole in the Wall Falls is a super easy hike. We were hiking with someone who happened to have an injury and he was able to do it with no problem.

14. Cabin Creek FallsCabin Creek Falls

On the way to Hole in the Wall Falls, you will pass by Cabin Creek Falls. You will pass Starvation Creek Falls on the way to both, a 186-foot waterfall. I didn’t include it as a hike because it’s next to the parking lot. This whole area is super fun for kids because they can climb all over rocks.

After a day spent exploring, the perfect way to unwind is by indulging in one of the many farm-to-table restaurants and enjoying some of the locally produced wine like Pinot Noir.

Book a morning waterfall tour.

I am sure there are even more great hikes for kids in the Columbia River Gorge, but we haven’t done them yet! Hopefully, I can re-write this article next year and share even more kid-friendly hikes.

Where to Stay in Portland, Oregon: 16 Unique Hotels https://www.mommytravels.net/where-to-stay-in-portland-oregon/ Sun, 23 May 2021 13:52:03 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=27089 The variety of places to stay in Portland is just as diverse as the Pacific Northwest city itself. From upscale to super hipster to hostels, they’ve got a little bit of everything. Recent years have brought a wave of hotels into the city, mostly boutique hotels instead of the standard chain hotels seen in some West Coast cities. At this point there is no shortage of unique hotels to choose from. The nice thing about Portland is, it is a fairly small city.

Where to Stay in Portland, Oregon

After staying in tons of hotels throughout the Portland area, these are my favorites and the ones I consider to be the best places to stay, thanks to extensive public transportation from the Portland International airport into almost anywhere in the city.

The Porter HotelThe Porter hotel lobby

We loved everything about the Porter Hotel when we stayed here. The beds were extremely comfortable, the robes were divine, and the indoor swimming pool and hot tub was lots of fun. The Porter Hotel is home to one of the best restaurants in the downtown area, Terrane Italian Kitchen + Bar. Not to mention a beautiful rooftop bar with sweeping views, Xport. You can read our full review at: The Porter a Wonderful Hotel in Downtown Portland

The Duniway

Abigail's Hideaway at the Duniway

Abigail’s Hideaway at the Duniway

The Duniway is in the heart of downtown Portland and features an indoor pool with a rooftop hangout space right outside. In the lobby, you will find the onsite restaurant Jackrabbit by Chef Chris Cosentino featuring lots of local ingredients. Read our full review: The Duniway Hotel in Downtown Portland, Oregon.

RiverPlace HotelRiverPlace Hotel Grand Suite

Kimpton RiverPlace hotel is one of the best hotels along the Willamette River, located at the south end of Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Many rooms feature panoramic views of the river. RiverPlace features an on-site restaurant, King Fish Tide & Shell. They have some really crazy amenities, so you will definitely want to read our full review: RiverPlace Hotel, Portland Oregon.

Heathman HotelHeathman hotel portland

The Heathman is a luxury hotel, and it is one of the closest hotels to the Portland Art Museum. Much of the downtown attractions are within easy walking distance of the hotel. My son really enjoyed the fitness center here. It’s small, but well equipped. Read our full review: Heathman Hotel Portland

Hotel Vintagehotel vintage bar

Hotel Vintage is down in the city center giving you easy access to the downtown area. Each room is dedicated to a local winery or vineyard, and the hotel provides frequent receptions allowing guests to sample local wines. Hotel Vintage has all the amenities one would expect including 24-hour business and fitness centers, and complimentary bikes. Their lobby bar, the Bacchus Bar, is one of my favorite places to enjoy happy hour from 4-6 pm with $7 cocktails. Plus, they have live music Wednesday – Saturday. Canopy by HiltonCanopy Portland hotel

Yes, there is a Hilton hotel in the Pearl District of Portland. In this area, you will find famous Portland landmarks like Powell’s City Books and lots of craft breweries. The Pearl is an old industrial area where the buildings have been refurbished and turned into shops, restaurants, bars, and more. The hotel has a 24-hour rooftop fitness center, floor-to-ceiling windows, a large HDTV, refrigerated drawer, Nespresso machine, ergonomic workspace, and our exclusive Canopy Bed. Like all Hiltons they offer a discounted rate for military members.

The HoxtonThe Hoxton Portland Oregon

The Hoxton is a budget friendly boutique hotel located near downtown in the Old Town Chinatown area near some fun attractions like the Chinese Garden, Voodoo Donuts, and the Portland Saturday Market, where you can shop directly from local artists. They have a rooftop bar and restaurant as well as a restaurant off the lobby with killer avocado toast. The rooms are a tad small, but they make good use out of the space. They do have larger rooms for those that need more than one bed.  The only downside to the Hoxton hotel is you have to find street parking or a nearby parking lot, since they offer no parking.

Inn at Northrup StationInn at Northrup Station

The Inn at Northrup Station is located in Nob Hill around the north part of NW 23rd street. In my opinion, this area has the best neighborhood vibe. If you enjoy unique shopping you will love NW 23rd. This is one of the hotels closest to the Pittock Mansion and Washington Park where you will find the Oregon Zoo, Portland Japanese Garden, and the International Test Rose Garden. They are all within a 10 minute drive. Your stay here includes an on-site parking pass, continental breakfast, Portland Street car tickets and Hi-Speed Wi-Fi. Last but not least, they have free parking, which is hard to find in Portland.

A few rooms have private baths, but for the most part it is shared baths. All guests have access to the heated soaking pool at Ruby’s Spa. With comfortable rooms, outstanding food options, epic views from a swanky rooftop bar, and an indoor pool there’s a lot of love about The Porter. The Porter hotel

The Porter

Recently, the kids and I took a little staycation in downtown Portland, Oregon at The Porter. It’s one of the newer hotels in the area and it is part of Hilton’s Curio collections so you can earn your points. We enjoyed our stay here a great deal. I always appreciate decent sleep in a hotel, a hot tub, and fantastic food.

Our room was super quiet and had two beds, but many of the rooms have just one bed. I heard that the corner rooms have a bit more room, but I didn’t see one myself, so I cannot confirm. The view from our room was not notable, but apparently, if you pay for an upgrade you can end up with a fantastic view.

All of the rooms have complimentary WiFi, a 50-inch TV, mini-fridge, tons of power outlets, an umbrella you can borrow, and cozy extras like robes and slippers. If you need a crib or a playpen they are available upon request.

The lighting in the bathroom was really good. We had a shower only, no bathtub. The bath products are Imperial.

The Porter hotel bathroom.

The plush Frette robes in the room are the best robes ever! Eden and I took a vote and these are the best hotel robes we’ve ever experienced. We liked them so much we took photos in them. The Porter Hotel robes

The mini bar in the room has snacks and drinks. It is full of Oregon goodies like Crater Lake Spirits. Plus, there’s a Keurig in the room with local teas and coffees.

The Porter Hotel minibar

In the basement is a heated indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room. Now, this may not sound any different than most hotels you’ve stayed at, but in Portland, it is very difficult to find a hotel that has a hot tub or a pool.

The fitness center is always open and offers classes in meditation, yoga and aqua aerobics. The Porter Hotel Indoor Pool

There is a business center in the lobby with computers.

Xport Bar & LoungeXport Bar and Lounge

Xport is a gorgeous rooftop bar with superior views of Portland. Located on the 16th floor of the Porter Hotel, Xport gives you various views of Portland including bridges and mountains. img 3758On a brisk day sit by the fire and warm up with one of their handcrafted cocktails like Cinderella’s Big Score a combination of plantation dark rum, Rhum Neisson Agricole, Giffard banana liqueur, Aperol, velvet falernum, lime, coconut milk, and citrus foam. Tacos at Xsport at The Porter Hotel

The bar menu is a tad limited, but all the bites are quite delicious, especially the chicken tinga tacos. Other morsels like crab tots and chickpea fries are pleasing as well. For seafood fans, there is a raw bar with oysters, Lomi Lomi, prawns, Dungeness crab, tuna poke, caviar, and more.img 3764

Kids are allowed up there during the day. Happy Hour is from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday with discounts on drinks and food. When it isn’t happy hour the best drink deal is a Stella beer.

Xport is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Every Friday and Saturday plus the first Tuesday of every month after 8 PM they have a DJ.

Terrane Italian Kitchen + Bar for savory Italian-inspired food served all day using fresh seasonal ingredients. All of their pasta is made in house and is excellent, especially the pea pasta. The butternut squash pasta is also pretty great. Their burrata was amazing. Terrane Italian Kitchen + Bar

They serve Italian wines and Pacific Northwest wines. They even have an Elk Cove Pinot Noir sparkling rose exclusive to them. In the mood, for a cocktail, you are in luck because they have super creative cocktails and they make their own limoncello.

Things you need to know about The Porter Hotel

Parking: There is no self-parking, only valet. Valet costs $49.00 per day, which I am pretty sure is the most expensive in the city. There are two cheaper garages nearby.

Pets: Service animals are allowed. Other pets up to 50 lbs are allowed as well, but you will have to pay a nonrefundable $75 pet deposit. They have pet amenities.

Accessible: They have the longest list of accessible features for guests I have ever seen. If you need an accessible room in Portland, I would guess this is where you should stay. To see the full list check out their website. It’s way to long for me to go into here.
