Where to Stay in Portland, Oregon: 16 Unique Hotels

The variety of places to stay in Portland is just as diverse as the Pacific Northwest city itself. From upscale to super hipster to hostels, they’ve got a little bit of everything. Recent years have brought a wave of hotels into the city, mostly boutique hotels instead of the standard chain hotels seen in some West Coast cities. At this point there is no shortage of unique hotels to choose from. The nice thing about Portland is, it is a fairly small city.

Where to Stay in Portland, Oregon

After staying in tons of hotels throughout the Portland area, these are my favorites and the ones I consider to be the best places to stay, thanks to extensive public transportation from the Portland International airport into almost anywhere in the city.

The Porter Hotel

We loved everything about the Porter Hotel when we stayed here. The beds were extremely comfortable, the robes were divine, and the indoor swimming pool and hot tub was lots of fun. The Porter Hotel is home to one of the best restaurants in the downtown area, Terrane Italian Kitchen + Bar. Not to mention a beautiful rooftop bar with sweeping views, Xport. The Duniway

Abigail’s Hideaway at the Duniway

The Duniway is in the heart of downtown Portland and features an indoor pool with a rooftop hangout space right outside. RiverPlace Hotel

Kimpton RiverPlace hotel is one of the best hotels along the Willamette River, located at the south end of Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Many rooms feature panoramic views of the river. Heathman Hotel

The Heathman is a luxury hotel, and it is one of the closest hotels to the Portland Art Museum. Much of the downtown attractions are within easy walking distance of the hotel. Hotel Vintage

Hotel Vintage is down in the city center giving you easy access to the downtown area. Each room is dedicated to a local winery or vineyard, and the hotel provides frequent receptions allowing guests to sample local wines. Hotel Vintage has all the amenities one would expect including 24-hour business and fitness centers, and complimentary bikes. Their lobby bar, the Bacchus Bar, is one of my favorite places to enjoy happy hour from 4-6 pm with $7 cocktails. Plus, they have live music Wednesday – Saturday. Canopy by Hilton

Yes, there is a Hilton hotel in the Pearl District of Portland. In this area, you will find famous Portland landmarks like Powell’s City Books and lots of craft breweries. The Pearl is an old industrial area where the buildings have been refurbished and turned into shops, restaurants, bars, and more. The hotel has a 24-hour rooftop fitness center, floor-to-ceiling windows, a large HDTV, refrigerated drawer, Nespresso machine, ergonomic workspace, and our exclusive Canopy Bed. Like all Hiltons they offer a discounted rate for military members.

The Hoxton

The Hoxton is a budget friendly boutique hotel located near downtown in the Old Town Chinatown area near some fun attractions like the Chinese Garden, Voodoo Donuts, and the Portland Saturday Market, where you can shop directly from local artists. They have a rooftop bar and restaurant as well as a restaurant off the lobby with killer avocado toast. The rooms are a tad small, but they make good use out of the space. They do have larger rooms for those that need more than one bed. The only downside to the Hoxton hotel is you have to find street parking or a nearby parking lot, since they offer no parking.

Inn at Northrup Station

The Inn at Northrup Station is located in Nob Hill around the north part of NW 23rd street. In my opinion, this area has the best neighborhood vibe. If you enjoy unique shopping you will love NW 23rd. This is one of the hotels closest to the Pittock Mansion and Washington Park where you will find the Oregon Zoo, Portland Japanese Garden, and the International Test Rose Garden. They are all within a 10 minute drive. Your stay here includes an on-site parking pass, continental breakfast, Portland Street car tickets and Hi-Speed Wi-Fi. Last but not least, they have free parking, which is hard to find in Portland.

Hotel Eastlund

Over in Lloyd district, this boutique hotel offers a nice mixture of amenities. All rooms and suites feature down pillows and blankets, a 47″ smart HD TV, Keurig coffee maker, USB charging ports at the desk and nightstand, and a luxurious modern bathroom with dual sinks, a soak-in tub, and walk-in shower. They’ve got delicious coffee from Portland’s Heart Coffee Roasters that they serve in their cafe, Citizen Baker. Hopefully their rooftop restaurant reopens soon.

The Society Hotel

This is a hostel in Old Town. They have 24 bunks in their co-ed bunk room. Each bunk features a headboard with storage space, outlets, and a curtain for added privacy. They also offer regular rooms with either shared bathrooms or their own bathrooms. The lobby features a cafe with coffee and pastries in the morning and wine and beer in the afternoon. The Society Hotel’s rooftop offers amazing views of the city in all directions.

The Nines

The Nines is located right downtown next to Pioneer Square. It’s an upscale hotel with sweeping views of Portland. Nines Hotel offers luxury bath facilities with complimentary brand-name toiletries, hairdryers, robes, and slippers. Upscale amenities are also available, including flat-screen cable televisions, mini-bars, premier bedding, turn-down services, concierge services, valet dry-cleaning, and laundry services. The fully-equipped fitness center even offers massage services. Their rooftop restaurant and bar, Departures, is excellent.

The Edgefield

McMenamins Edgefield is located in Troutdale, Oregon (between the Portland airport and the scenic Columbia Gorge). Spread out across the property are all kinds of offerings including a hotel, spa, several restaurants and bars, theater, and a winery. The grounds are beautiful including a water tower, fire pit area, vegetable garden, 3 par golf course, and grape fields. The rooms here are simple without amenities like TVs or telephones. A few rooms have private baths, but for the most part it is shared baths. All guests have access to the heated soaking pool at Ruby’s Spa. Instead of sitting around in a hotel room watching TV, you will find yourself out and about wine tasting in the winery, listening to live music by the Little Red Shed, or unwinding over in the heated soaking pool.

Jupiter Hotel

The Jupiter Hotel is a motor inn-turned-boutique hotel in the central Eastside of Portland. It’s next to several popular places including live music venue Doug Fir Lounge, Casa Del Matador, Voodoo Doughnuts and Pix Patisserie. The hotel has minimalist guest rooms and is pet friendly. Amenities include: complimentary coffee from local roaster Water Avenue, free wifi throughout the property, city bikes for rent, computer access, front desk concierge service and Charles Smith Walla Walla Wines and eco-friendly Natura bath products available in all guest rooms. For a fee they have on site parking available. They also have two Zipcars on site for rent

The Kennedy School

The Kennedy School is a fun place to stay and a unique experience that can only be had at a McMenamins property. They have 57 rooms available, 22 of which have private bathrooms in the English Wing. All stays here include complimentary coffee each morning, admission to the heated soaking pool and theater. Pets are still allowed to stay in some rooms. Like all McMenamins hotels, the Kennedy School is quirky, none of the rooms have a TV, and there are restaurants and bars spread throughout the property.

Hotel Rose

Portland is nicknamed the city of roses, and Hotel Rose is directly across the street from Tom McCall Waterfront Park, one of the largest city green spaces in the United States and home to the annual Rose Festival fair. They have European-style bedding, comfy robes, big fluffy towels, beach cruiser bikes, unlimited bottled water, and they’re dog-friendly!

Mark Spencer Hotel

Mark Spencer hotel’s rooms feature luxury bedding package, 50” LED TVs, custom furniture pieces throughout, and fog-free mirrors. They have a nice outdoor courtyard, a fitness center, and onsite restaurant. Plus, it’s near Directors Park.
